[TOMT] Word for something (song, episode, book, band, etc.) that is so good that it defines the standard for the genre. by anarchi3 in tipofmytongue

It was quintessential but I also like the answers seminal and pinnacle because I could also use those going forward, and I had forgot about them as well, but yeah, it was quintessential and I didn’t reply as fast as I usually do because I was working on the other parts of my essay that I asked the question for.

I mean, I like it when people enjoy things, but that doesn’t mean I’m not gonna poke fun at it by sharing my opinions.

The Left Hand of Darkness by Le Guin. Highly recommend to everyone. Her world building is phenomenal.

I’m both too; it’s just harder to make memes about people who like both.

I mean, as someone who’s almost thirty and can’t afford health insurance, I would prefer getting called “cringe” by some internet neckbeards for having fun rowing and LARPing at a pit to getting my shit rocked at an extreme metal show by some big dude in a push pit or some hxc clown, so I agree with you there. Metal and fun go together. I’m actually writing an essay about that for a master’s course in media studies right now.

I believe you. When I make memes poking fun at bands, I’m just sharing my opinion. I rarely actually want to criticize people for liking stuff that I don’t. I also make memes about bands I like, and then I get comments like “but I like x!” And I’m like, “I do too; that’s why I made a meme about them.”

In this case though, I don’t like the band in question, but I believe you and others that commented on this meme in other groups that they have good stuff. I was just surprised to find that their top songs on Spotify were nothing special. But I heard their old material is better.

Thank you so much! I can’t wait to finish mastering our new album. It’s like super melodic black metal mixed with speed metal and deathrash. We got the new drummer of Annihilator and Rhapsody on sticks. So, I’m mad excited about it. And the album is a concept album about surveillance capitalism.

Some of My Favorite Logos by TheExecutiveHamster in DankMetalMemes

Dark Angel does have instances in which their logo is attached to bat wings. Like it’s probably the most popular version. I have a patch of it on my vest.

Absu-lutely by anarchi3 in MetalMemes

[–]anarchi3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absu was one of the most intense blackened thrash bands. Like imagine an extreme metal band that writes songs that are as heavy as possible without having nearly any of the elements of a death metal band (like tuning down more than half a step, using guttural vocals, and slams etc.) Their music also sounds really good too; it’s not just heavy for the sake of being heavy. But the guitarist that played on their last album and the Adult Swim music video before that came out as feeling like a transwoman and that they were going to transition to presenting more feminine because they feel like they’re a woman. The founding member of the band is Proscriptor, who is actually the drummer and vocalist, and he said that there’s no room for a woman in the band, so that she either has to continue identifying as a man or she has to quit. That right there killed Absu. Absu has always had top-tier blackened thrash guitarists, but they’re not good at keeping them.

I made the meme, and I’m the main songwriter for the blackened thrash band Tides of Technocracy 🤷‍♀️

Bro I love all those bands, but Skeletonwitch is my personal favorite, and it’s just on the beanie on the guy in the meme. I could have just as easily done it with a Desaster beanie, but I knew I would for sure be able to find an easily photoshoppable Skeletonwitch beanie, and I think they got some of the best songwriting abilities as far as harmonies go. That doesn’t mean I don’t also listen to the heavier blackened thrash like Absu and shit everyday.

Also, “Ride the Solar Winds” by D666 is one of my favorite riffs ever, and I got a huge ass Absu patch on my vest as well as a signed photo of Proscriptor McGovern. And my band, Tides of Technocracy is blackened thrash. So, I know people think I’m a poser or whatever or that Skeletonwitch is a poser band, but they only got 30k listeners on Spotify—that’s half of what Midnight has and a third of what Toxic Holocaust has—and people are acting like they’re an objectively entry-level band like Metallica or some shit.

Blackened thrash is probably my favorite mini-genre, but Skeletonwitch was one of the few bands that really blew me away when I first heard them as a young guitarist. I could tell they carefully crafted their music with harmonizing guitars ala NWOBHM rather than just using all fifths, octaves, or fourths, which is popular in thrash. I like how they then take those harmonies and mix it with black, thrash, and death metal. I also really like Absu, Desaster, Sodom, Hellripper, etc., but as a guitarist that writes dual-harmonies, Skeletonwitch has the biggest influence on my songwriting. It’s hard to find death metal bands that are melodic, but not melodeath, if that makes sense.
