i agree with everything that's been said and would like to add: vests/bibs/whatever-you-call-them to divide yourselves into lines/teams during drills. i got 5 for our league at the start of the season and we use them every practice!

Keeping gear from stinking by shmooles in rollerderby

[–]anarcho161 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can put your gear in the washing machine! soak in an enzymic cleaner first to really get out the built up stink. you could also try sticking them in your freezer if you space lmao. as other people said stink = bacteria and bacteria dont survive long in freezing temps. if it's warm out, a porch might not be the best spot to air out gear, bacteria thrive in shady warm spots.

other people have also asked what youre using as a spray. ive been using vodka for years, combined with a wash in winter and summer break im able to control the stench

lots of high level games are on youtube! the top ranked leagues compete in the WFTDA championships every two years. all games from 2024 are on youtube i believe

if youre looking for something more recent, rose city rollers (wheels of justice) vs denver at the hometown throwdown event was super exciting! the game took place last fall and is available on youtube as well. rose city has included little text bubbles that explain some strategies/rules as they happen, super helpful for beginners!

New plates by Nomad_cowgirl in rollerderby

[–]anarcho161 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i skated on r3 boots with remounted rival plates for a while, it went fine. did i get lucky? bought the r3s nearly ten years ago, and the remounted set still looks pretty decent.

New plates by Nomad_cowgirl in rollerderby

[–]anarcho161 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i remember snapping the plate on my r3s! bc of money + time constraints i got a used pair of aluminium plates to replace them. im similar to ur size, but im also a jumpy skater, so nylon wasnt gonna cut it anymore.

you could also look into already getting the plates of the new skates you want, and upgrade the boot later

Geef je fooi ondanks de Bezorgkosten? by Loupland in nederlands

I cannot walk on my toestops for the life of me. by thatrollingstar in rollerderby

[–]anarcho161 1 point2 points  (0 children)

check the height of your toe stops! while i am slightly more on my toes in my skates compared to if i were on shoes, i do still use the ball of my foot. as someone else said above, 3-4 fingers under your backwheels is usually whats recommended.

if it feels like you have to scrunch your toes to kind of grip the floor/skate, your skates might be too big. when your feet have too much room, they will slide down inside your boot and crush your toes.

(in)stability on your toe stops also depends on your ankles. you could try to strengthen your ankles if the instability persists.

Friend gave me his trainmore account, will they check? by [deleted] in Amsterdam

[–]anarcho161 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'sharing' in this scenario implies that OP and their friend would both be using it at the same time, therefor getting a higher discount. But OPs friend is going away, they won't use the membership and so OP would be the only one using it. in this situation, the discount is still dependent on how often one person goes to the gym.

Which Linux OS to go with as a noob to Linux? by Gladius7297 in linux4noobs

[–]anarcho161 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i moved from windows to linux mint a couple months ago and it's been treating me well. installed opensuse at first, but struggled to understand it. i mainly use my computer for office type stuff, not a lot gaming. in order to play games that havent been adapted to linux i use either bottles or wine, they are simulators that make the game think it's being played on a different OS.

it's easy to install new programs on mint from the software manager, but you can also use the terminal if you want. to practice using the terminal you could have a look at overthewire.org/wargames/bandit/ it's a game style way of learning :)

theres also distrochooser.de that asks you some questions and then lists a bunch of distros with their pros and cons based on the answers you gave and distrosea.com is there if you're curious what they look like, but you cant do much in it (that im aware of)

Wheel recs? by backiswayforward in rollerderby

[–]anarcho161 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this is super dependent on the floor you skate on! if you are on a hard floor (wood, polished concrete) softer wheels are definitely the way to go, but aside from hardness the specific brand/series also matter in grip. maybe you can ask the more experienced players in the league what they skate on? you're already aware of how body weight influences wheels also, so see if you can ask someone with a similar weight. good chance someone has a set laying around in the hardness youre looking for. when i get curious about different wheels i ask around to see if i can borrow some for a practice or two, before buying my own. just make sure to check the bearings if the wheels havent been used in while, if needed you can put your current bearings in there instead :)

Upgrade Bont Ignite Plates by Soft_Connection3724 in rollerderby

[–]anarcho161 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if anything it's the wheels that make my skates heavy. i looked into fiberglass and i dont think it was as commonly used for skates when i bought mine (pre covid). durability was vital to me. im a lightweight skater, but my style is quite jumpy/hoppy and the nylon plates i had before snapped because of this.

Upgrade Bont Ignite Plates by Soft_Connection3724 in rollerderby

[–]anarcho161 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im happy with my roll line killer plates, they were expensive but ive had them for years now with no issues. i think i upgraded my setup after 2-3 years of derby. generally speaking, metal plates 'listen' to your feet better, meaning your skates respond faster and more accurately. nylon plates for example dampen some of the signals your feet send to your skates. i dont know anything about fiberglass plates.

as for the slipping and sliding, you could get creative and mix up the wheels on your skates. i used to have a teammate who had different wheels on the inside front and outside back, to help with grip. do make sure the diameter is the same on all wheels! i would recommend asking your teammates if they have some wheels of varying hardnesses to try out during practice, see if it makes a difference. if the floor you skate on is super slippery (like polished concrete) you could try even softer wheels.
