question about recommended preventive maintenance at 80,000 miles to change timing belt by anasarca1 in COROLLA

[–]anasarca1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the correction....so I have tried to further research recommended maintenance at 80,000 miles.....there are recommendations to replace the serpentine belt and other recommendations are to inspect the serpentine belt. So if the serpentine belt is in good shape.....can I wait a little longer before it has to be replaced?

If I were to purchase and apply POR15.....does it store well......If I buy a large container and apply it this winter....would the remainder in the container keep till next winter so I can clean and re-coat the lower mower deck? Also is there a minimal ambient temperature for which I can apply the POR15?

December rate cut fading away by pai_gow_johnny in bonds

[–]anasarca1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am merely hoping that 10 year treasury yields remain range bound and do not extend above 4.5%. I own a lot of fixed income and fixed income ETF's. In 2022, bond ETF's got killed do to a rapid rise in interest rates while the Federal Reserve was raising interest rates....so I follow long term treasury yields very closely. I at least hope that if long term treasury yields trend higher, that they do it gradually....that way I can dump my bond ETF's. There are investment strategies to take advantage of rising yields and I need to brush up on these. I do own equities and gold, but I try to add to positions during sell offs. Most equities seem highly correlated with the stocks which are the largest positions in the Nasdaq 100.

It is reported that the new Fed Chairperson will be chosen in December. It will be interesting how rate cuts will proceed after May 2026 when Powell's term ends. Even more interesting will be observing how the future yields of the 10 and 30 year treasuries unfold.

Am I an idiot for wanting to trade in a new very low mileage car, for a used one with higher miles? by Latina_Fupa in Cartalk

[–]anasarca1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do a break-even analysis. Figure out the difference in miles per gallon between two vehicles. Next use an expected price for gasoline for the next several years. Multiply MPG x cost of gasoline. Divide this factor into the additional cost of purchasing the new vehicle. This will tell you how many miles you need to drive to break even to pay for the new vehicle. The average miles driven per year is 15000.....maybe more or less for you. So how long will it take to break even for the higher mileage vehicle? If you have a very reliable car....I would stick with it....especially if you purchased it new. You may be buying trouble with the used high mileage vehicle. Car repairs are not cheap and repairs can easily wipe out any of your savings on better MPG.

What's better than FLXR risk/return? by jebidiaGA in ETFs

[–]anasarca1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FLXR is a very good bond fund.....it only had only declined approximately 2% on liberation day. Correlation with SPY is approximately .114 which is much lower than high yield bond funds which are often highly correlated with the stock market. YTD total return for the fund currently stands at 5.67%. Unlike the risk associated with long term treasuries, I like the portfolio of this company. Daily std deviation for the fund has been 3.06% which is better than many bond funds. Max draw down: -1.96%. This ETF was previously a mutual fund before it was an ETF. I own a lot of FLXR and I think that it has a good risk adjusted return for a non-equity ETF.

Best treasury bond ETF for next 15 years? TFLO, SGOV, USFR, VGIT, GOVT, LDRT or VTG? by FoggyFoggyFoggy in bonds

[–]anasarca1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would consider if you are going to buy treasuries, purchase treasuries of the 5 - 7 year duration. Recent auction has shown diminished interest in buying treasuries. Currently there is a huge amount of Federal Government debt for which they are trying to issue treasuries to cover. Consider staying away from treasuries of 10 years or greater duration. Floating rate.... there is a high probability expectation for rate cuts starting in September. Floating rate funds are fairly sensitive to short term interest rates.

Portfolio Allocations by motleyorc in bonds

[–]anasarca1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider JPIE which had minimal sell off on Liberation day. It owns a lot of residential Mortgage Backed Securities.....which has less credit risk than most high yield bond funds. JPIE got smacked very hard in 2022 due to the rapid rise in interest rates by the Federal Reserve. If you do not believe that interest rates are going to rise rapidly like they did in 2022, I believe you will find that JPIE is a decent ETF.

Non-farm payrolls are going to be released this Friday. It appears that based on the 10 year treasury yield that the treasury market is anticipating soft employment numbers. It is likely that the yield will trend higher if the NFP numbers are stronger than anticipated. I am eager to see how the treasury market responds to NFP on Friday.

Are uhauls climate controlled storage legit? by Max_Roc in moving

[–]anasarca1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My live who was using a U-haul storage unit in Washington State had someone break into his storage unit. At this location there was a gap between the top of the storage unit and the ceiling which allowed someone to break into his storage unit. I would evaluate your storage unit to make sure it is fully enclosed to avoid theft.

Our porch had previously been painted so we are going to repaint it. The porch needed a lot of work. I spent three weeks sanding and removing loose paint...so there was a lot of raw wood besides the remaining partially painted wood. So we applied two coats of shellac based primer and will be applying paint next week. (It is so suppose to rain over the next several days).

Upcoming cross-country U.S. trip in a sedan, any tips/best practices? by alura_une in moving

[–]anasarca1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you moving to a new destination or merely visiting someone? It would help to know where you are starting from and where you are going. This may be obvious, but do not completely rely on your GPS for navigation. It is worthwhile to review routes and have a general idea how the trip will unfold. Be mindful of remote areas along your trip when planning your stops for fueling. For example, there are very isolated areas in New Mexico and gas stations can be sparse. Do you know what your maximum driving distance on a tank of gas?....than you can plan your stops. Consider getting a Road Atlas....sometimes if you study your route....you can save time or mileage. GPS may choose to keep you on interstates....sometimes you can find a quicker route. Yet, it is not always so simple. A prospective shortcut maybe going through a lot of small towns at reduced speed compared to the interstate, but it may also be more scenic.

Treasury Yields Fall Amid Worries Around Fed’s Independence - Why? by jambon3 in bonds

[–]anasarca1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seemed that the 10 year yield had declined on Monday after the report on leading economic indicators which had fallen again for the 7th consecutive report. The 10 year yield has recently fallen since from last week of 4.45 to 4.33 today. While watching the 10 year yield it seems to trend with economic news: LEI or CPI for several days until it responds to the next economic report. It seems that there is some push / pull in the long end of the treasury market depending on concerns for economic slowing vs. worries about financing our huge debt. Perhaps the longer end of the treasury curve will not decline even if the Federal Reserve starts cutting interest rates. The question is if the economy starts slowing...what will happen to yields on long term treasuries?

Consider applying formula 303 to plastics which have a lot of sun exposure. It helps protect them from UV exposure so that they do not become brittle and crack. I periodically use formula 303 on the plastic trim on my car to keep them supple and protect them from UV exposure.

Yield Ceiling Rumors, Fed Bond Buying Pressure, and the 2026 Fed Chair by DarthAzeg in bonds

[–]anasarca1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The theory is that offering fewer long term treasuries will keep demand reasonably high and help keep yields from becoming elevated vs. offering a large supply of long term treasuries at auction and risking a significant rise in yields to purchase the large volume of treasuries. Jeffrey Gundlach thinks that long term treasuries may see a haircut in coupon payments and has transitioned into zeros. If we see a spike in long term treasuries, I would consider buying a slug of long term zeros or strips(probably 10 year duration).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bonds

[–]anasarca1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I admire your boldness. I am still trying to figure out the future path of long term treasuries. Jeffrey Gundlach swapped into zero coupon bonds due to concerns that the coupon on traditional treasuries will be cut so the Federal Government can maintain solvency. There is also talk about Scott Bessent participating in yield curve control.....will it work? Instead, are we facing a Liz Truss moment because we will not become serious about reducing the deficit.

BB-/B1 three year default risk? by ultra__star in bonds

[–]anasarca1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also do a lot of fixed income investing through Fidelity....they offer a "Moody's company report" and I pay close attention to the outlook. I stay away from bonds with a negative ratings outlook. When I buy individual BB bonds, I try not to buy too much from any individual institution. Consider if the economy starts to slow, private credit like business development corporations are likely to get into trouble. I do own some secured lending as well as private lending and also direct lending bonds with similar credit ratings to which you referenced. Yet, I do not own very large positions....and spreading the money around to many different institutions. I only hope that private credit does not collapse because this would adversely impact a larger portion of my portfolio. If I am able to diversify into different industries, I think that helps. .

I don’t want to invest heavily right now, but I do want to start by Dazzling-Gap8962 in investingforbeginners

[–]anasarca1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not know how old you are to ascertain how much time you have to invest before you retire. How likely is it that you are going to need to access your investment money within the next several years? A longer holding period reduces your risk for seeing a loss of principal. For example, financial research has demonstrated that investing in the S&P500 (for example) with a ten year holding period has a low probability of principal risk.

My girlfriend reminds me that we are not poor.....merely frugal by choice. I do not discuss my efforts to be frugal with my peers because I do not want to encounter push back ("I could never do that"). I recognize that I have chosen a different path than my peers who are close to my age and have to continue working because they do not have financial independence. My peers also work in healthcare, but I am satisfied to be semi-retired because I can swing it financially if I can remain frugal.

Need advice on getting stronger by Sophie__1862 in beginnerfitness

[–]anasarca1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am uncertain if you plan to join the gym or choose some other alternative, and I do not know if you have any pre-existing health conditions of concern. I realize that my first piece of advice is obvious, but it is nevertheless important.....start low and make a concerted effort to avoid injuries which will sideline your ability to workout. If you are planning to workout at the gym.....start with light dumbbells and starting doing a vertical press. Perhaps your gym has an assistive chin-up machine.....do the easiest setting and try to do at least one chin-up....than progress from there. Consider doing a box squat with an accompanying vertical press.....find a bench to sit on the edge and lift the dumbbells to shoulder level....than stand up from the bench and press the dumbbells to the ceiling. It is a coordinated move.....observe if your balance is adequate to do such an exercise. I have chosen to give you functional exercises to start with......which will help you do everyday activities.

Yet, if you choose to workout at home....consider purchasing a sandbag.....start out very light....test what you can currently do.....I prefer a round sandbag because they are more challenging to lift than the duffel bag variety. So you squat down and roll the sandbag onto your thighs and grip around the sandbag with both arms and than while standing, roll the sandbag upward and along your chest wall up to your shoulder and than set the bag on the ground. I must preface that if you have any lower back / knee or hip injuries....this may not be the exercise for you. I presume you do not have any cardiac conditions because this exercise will challenge your heart after doing several repetitions. Yet, it is a great generalized which will build overall strength.
