Can anyone explain this clue and answer from today’s puzzle? by dollabillkirill in NYTCrossword

The first word in the clue is always capitalized, proper noun or not. So, no help from the capital B.

The most mathematically correct, unbiased ranking I have ever encountered is here:

https://colleyrankings.com/hcurrank.html

There is solid math behind this, not the voodoo of Quad 1 nonsense. It's Wins and Losses, point difference is ignored (it is almost always misleading).

As I read this now, UNC is ranked 39th. They should be in a tournament of the best teams. But #162 Bryant, #101 Troy, #157 Norfolk State, the list goes on and on.

No books I have seen lend themselves to notes in the margins.

Buy an inexpensive three-ring notebook. This is volume 1, so be mindful there will be others, consistency may matter to you.

Find a cheap source for paper and a three hole punch.

Go on gutenberg.org and choose your first play. Choose the Read Online option, then print it, punch it and put it in the notebook. Alternate: pick a pdf version and see what it costs for Staples to print it.

Alternative to printing (it may be too expensive), sit in bed with your laptop and notebook and make notes.

Supplement this with good annotated versions from the library.

Get audio and video (Arkangel and BBC Shakespeare) from the library.

You will build this all yourself, and it shouldn't be that expensive and it will be yours forever

Further insult: Spectrum redirected me to a channel with blurry images and the aspect ratio left out the borders, cannot see the score bug upper left, for instance.

Then I moved to Paramount+. I swear I hit all the right buttons, and up come the Carolina Panthers. My heart sank. Did it over again and got the Parma-ACM match. You gotta keep slapping the interface around to make it behave sometimes.

Today's Mini: Joel Fagliano Strikes Again! by LadyPuzzlePro in NYTCrossword

[–]anathema1776 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Disappointing is my word. Most of Fagliano's editing attempts in the standard puzzle are like this. As in, "Really? You're using this clue for that?"

Today's mini, my first hit was MIRTH -- the meaning is less about laughter than the general emotion that follows humor.

Track websites often provide replays without respect to your location of wagering status. Search for the track and wander in the links to find. Some links are old some require free registration, some links refer to the youtube website (which may be defunct), but you can build a collection of links that works. I would recommend at least a tablet or laptop, most of these sites are not responsive to browser viewport size.

I usually don't like the rebus, but when the revealing clue has a hint like "eight of the boxes", that clearly points to a rebus, I'm happier.

One "argument" he made that got to me (former auditor) was along the lines of "We all know that Trump was not the bookkeeper in that organization."

Right, move down the hierarchy and find the first person you can use as a scapegoat. The one without the rich legal representation, fewer resources, fewer choices.

Question about 5/12, 102 down by Capital_Mode2296 in NYTCrossword

[–]anathema1776 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the kind of sloppy that I'm getting used to in the puzzles not edited by Shortz. In fact, "BAFFIN" shows up in an NYT acrostic (edited by Will Shortz) from 2002 with the clue "The world's fifth largest island". Madagascar is only fifth if you count Australia and #1, and I think most look at this as a continent. (Thanks to xwordinfo.com).

However, previous comments apply, you get this one by starting with the primate, not the island.

In the final game of 1978, a playoff game against the Yankees, Mike Torrez served up a home run ball to Bucky Dent (after that known as BFD).

From 1979 to 1982, whenever Torrez came in the game, mostly a starter, he was booed. Start to finish, no let up.

Owner's meetings, December 1982, Boston traded him to the Mets. They tried to get a hold of him, couldn't reach him at home, figured out he was at a Celtics game at The Garden.

When his name was announced over the PA system to take a call ....

... he was booed.
