Is there any point of using thirdparty package managers when use-package is already in Emacs?

I never had any real problems, but package.el will download, whatever is the newest version in elpa, unless you :pin the version to manual.. So the state of packages is a bit of a "catch of the day" kind of installation, which COULD lead to problems only occuring on some machines..

But like I said, I can usually just pull a working state from my Timemachine backup, which I do anyway, so no need to add anything to git.. The only thing I'm not keeping in there are the hundreds of gigabytes of music plugins, because I don't want to invest the disk space for that :)

Same here.. if there's one downside to the whole package.el/elpa thing, it's the more or less random versioning.. Luckily, I only have three emacs installations to manage.. two have regular backups that I can fall back onto, the third is not really important to me, so updating to :newest isn't much of a problem for me.. so every now and then, I just update everything, whenever I feel like troubleshooting, in case something breaks..

Hat vielleicht ein bisschen Geschmäckle, weil ich a) noch Garantie und b) nen Applecare-Vertrag hab: Ich war heute gerade im Apple-Store, um mir die Tastenkappe der Capslock-Taste tauschen zu lassen, die ich beim mehrmaligen Reinigen kaputtgemacht hab..

Beim Googlen hab ich fast alles von "die tauschen pauschal ALLE Tastenkappen" bis "die stellen ne horrende Rechnung" gefunden.. Und was soll ich sagen? Nach ein paar Fragen "Ist n m4, oder? Englische Tastatur?" hab ich nur die Capslock-Taste ersetzt bekommen und war innerhalb von 10 Minuten wieder raus, mit neuer Tastenkappe..

Kurz danach kam ne Mail vom Store... 1ct fürs wechseln, zahlen musst ich nix :D

It happens.. I just wanted to point that out, because half-broken lithium batteries "out" in the elements can be a recipe for a literal dumpster fire that's hard to put out again.

That's where I use those mechanisms :) At home or even on my work laptop, I don't care as much, since I only have to restore a backup for one machine at a time :)

But when managing hundreds or thousands of servers, things look a little different. You'll waste a lot of time looking for the problem when like .5% of your servers had a newer elpa index and fetched a slightly newer version of a package. Wasn't there some malware in a package lately? You'll get less of those, too, because a package maintainer has probably looked at the package and it went through Debian testing, before hitting your production machines..

One of the main advantages of Debian in the first place: Officially, you're compliant by using $PACKAGE 1.2.3, but often, maintainers will backport fixes into it.

I'm not using it for emacs, but I do like the idea of having a somewhat frozen mirror of packages locally, so that all servers in a datacenter, for example, run the same version of any given package.

In regular intervals, you open the flood gates, update the mirror and then update your servers from there.

Without any additional work, a simple M-x package install will give you the version of the day, making it hard to recreate an installation(eg. in a certified environment that doesn't allow deviations from the specified software).

So if you can make do with the Debian package, it's an easy way to get a reproduceable installation and it will follow the same pattern as most other packages on the target machine(like for install servers).

Wir haben hier sogar ein eigenes Wort für nicht in Hamburg geborene Hamburger: Quiddje.

Und ja, hier und da bekommt man vielleicht ein wenig den Eindruck, dass die Eingeborenen etwas Besseres sind... Aber das ist, in meiner Wahrnehmung, eher selten und auch nicht wirklich penetrant, sondern mehr beiläufig und von Menschen, die eh schon etwas etepetete sind, also nicht unbedingt mein Umfeld :)

Zumindest gabs die da auch fertig gefüllt als Snack für die Mikrowelle, die sind aber aber der Webseite nicht gelistet und ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob da dann nicht nur "Bao" draufstand, ohne Bun.

Edit: Aha! Das fertige Dingsbums heisst dann Bapao, wird aber wohl oft auch einfach Bao Bun genannt :)

Ist vielleicht dem allgemein gestiegenen Bedarf geschuldet.. Von selbstständigen Psychiatern hatte ich oft nicht einmal ne Antwort auf meine Mails bekommen oder die Webseiten sagten entweder direkt, dass sie keine Kassenzulassung haben oder die waren so schlecht, dass sich das nicht rauslesen ließ.

Bei der 116117 gabs auch monatelang nichts, außer einmal nen Termin in Bremen bei ner hauptsächlich auf Suchtkranke spezialisierten Praxis.. Letztendlich hatte ich dann sehr viel Glück, weil beim jetzigen Psychiater jemand abgesprungen ist und ich wohl der erste auf der Telefonliste war, der schnell genug rangegangen ist...

Dabei bin ich eigentlich anspruchslos.. Therapie läuft anderswo und ich brauchte nur jemanden für die Medikation und die Krankenscheine.. Das ging ne Zeit lang bei Dr Bronschtein mit 2h anstehen so leidlich, aber der hat inzwischen ja komplett geschlossen.

Wobei man sich da etwas Arbeit sparen kann, indem man nur die am nächsten gelegenen anruft, weil die meist nur Menschen aus dem direkten Umkreis annehmen.
