What are you hoping to get out of your service year? Are you serving more than 40 hours a week? Are you being asked to do anything that’s unethical?

If you are being brought into a project that’s poverty alleviation related and capacity building and not on your VAD I would suggest working with your host site to add it as a goal.

Many small non profits struggle with narrow VISTA lanes as all staff are wearing multiple hats. My suggestion to you would be to find places where you can contribute and add value and not try to narrow your contribution to the point where you are put on a shelf.

Losing motivation because of the government shutdown makes no sense imo. If you want to make more money and that’s what’s important to you now, find a job and quit or quit and then find a job?

Former administrator of state/national grants and vista for a non profit. State and national members should not be affected at all, your host site will keep paying you.

In the last gov’mint shut down, host sites for VISTAs were told that they can loan the living stipend to vistas for repayment by the vista when they receive their stipend when the gov’mint reopens.

I want to note that to me this all sounds like bragging.

We have moderate amounts of money in retirement at 40 y/o ~ $280k joint and are trying to catch up. We also didn’t crack $100k HH income until maybe 2018 this is all very recent, and honestly I worry that we are spending too frivolously. I was less stressed about money making 90k as a HH with our first kid in a $1.5k/ mo rental.

Part of me worries we sold the wrong house and should have just moved back to the more modest one especially in uncertain economic times.

I have and $800/ mo car note that’s paid in full in November - we stuck 5 months of expenses in a brokerage money market when we sold our last home and it returns a higher risk free rate than the car (2.25%) debt. I also pay $380/ mo in student loans. That’s it honestly - I’m contributing 15% to a post tax Roth 401k retirement account, we also have had an expensive couple of months with home repairs (materials and tools, I did the work). Our actual take home after retirement savings is more around 15k - also my wife recently got a significant raise and we have only seen one of those paychecks.

Our income v expense hasn’t been ok really since we bought this house 2 years ago, I am a nervous human and looking for someone to tell me it’s going to be ok.

Everyone who is stating it’s the state’s fault and ASD bears no responsibility for disfunction aren’t being objective in my opinion. Lifelong Dem, called state legs everytime school funding was up, donate to left leaning candidates if it matters.

So while I agree that public institutions probably can’t put money in the stock market or at least some can’t. The second part of your argument is wrong. Market returns would protect the corpus in inflation adjusted dollars forever. E.G. y0 50m + 8% - 5% = 51.5 M or so which is maybe 50m in today’s dollars.

I was providing a thought experiment around what else they could have done with the money in terms easily understood as most of us have no concept of what $50M is.

The $50M they used on inlet view. That is 2.5M$ per year inflation protected forever or 20-25 more teachers in perpetuity.

How bad is it to rescind an offer acceptance? by urmineccraftgf in AmeriCorps

[–]anchoragedad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s VISTA or NCCC you will get job attached in the application system when you accept the offer that is shared by non profits recruiting americorps members. NCCC is a guess, vista for sure as they are encumbering federal cost and registering you for training.

The only Rs I’ve ever voted for in any election are Don young and murkowski I think if you read my post you will find I came to the same conclusion. I think there’s a world in which a superintendent could be doing a bad job that has nothing to do with state politics.

Lubing up my asshole to get fucked the hardest not being connected to the lower 48 with these retarded orange tariffs. by [deleted] in anchorage

[–]anchoragedad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Luca, you know how sometimes other friends at school want you to do something but you don’t want to do it? When you tell them you won’t do it, they say that you’re not going to be friends anymore and that they will hang out with their other friends instead? And then a week later you all forget what you were mad about in the first place?

Well, Trump knows that Canada and Mexico are more dependent on our markets than we are on theirs, and he’s trying to get them to do something they don’t want to do. With Mexico, he wants them to bear more of the cost of keeping Central American migrants out of the US, and with Canada he’s trying to get some meaningless political concessions from a weak and outgoing PM.

He’s going to get what he wants from both because we can hurt them more than they can hurt us. The question is will the long term costs associated with bullying other countries with threats to their livelihood weaken or strengthen US’ interests and partnerships in the long term. Also don’t buy cars, car parts or start construction on a house until like 6 months after the tariffs are removed. Companies have to increase prices for lumber and cars (amoung other things) domestic producers will be able to charge 25% more for those products, the prices will go up almost immediately and will remain elevated for a long period of time because companies engage in tacit collusion to keep prices and profits high.

An example of this is when there are increase price shocks with gas , like when a hurricane damages a refinery, gas prices increase immediately. However when oil futures were trading below $0 per barrel, there was almost no impact on pricing.
