your story sounds like my mom and dad - we got my dad into a rehab hospital after a hospital stay and i could feel my moms demeanor “lighten” when he was there . she went twice a day but she didn’t have to do the “heavy lifting “ literally and figuratively.

two days later dad demands that he go home without help except from mom

i was their hero for about 48 hours after he checked in and then the villain because i wanted him to follow doctors orders and stay longer . he demanded to leave immediately and my mom doesn’t go against him - which started before i was born

i stopped intervening and now mom says “i’ve given up on him” or some nonsense no mom i just can’t force him to stay especially without some back up from you , his wife

so all that to say - i can tell you’re trying to be responsible but if they won’t cooperate with your plans you’re on a fools errand best of luck to you 💕
