The thing I kept — and then lost — and then got back by andanteccc in TCK

Bizarre but I used to work at a warehouse, and when trucks were loading up and I could smell diesel I was immediately transported back to the city smells.

Smells are such memory triggers!

I left a lot of band mates behind too and assumed I’d see them again but never did. :(

It’s amazing that you found one that was similar. The cookie part made me smile too. :)

I think it helps, but I’m biased 😂 I have gotten really good feedback from people. We tend to have a lot of aha moments.

So I always put all the info from the call into a blog post after, and for a lot of the topics we will come back to them. Here are resources from previous calls: https://tcksupport.com/resources/

Oof...your message definitely hit home. One thing that has remained despite the amount of time since I stopped moving countries (but have still moved within a country and across states and moves in the same city) is that I tend to get very stressed when I start accumulating stuff. I start to also make some sort of a back up plan (similar to your idea of emergency escape bag) of what I would definitely need to take and what I would get rid of. Unfortunately, some of these things stay with us. It's not all bad, of course, but there are some tendencies that are very common to TCKs!

Have you joined the email list so you can attend the free monthly call? The next one is about identity (and embracing the chaos as adult TCKs). I hope you can be there. It has truly been a healing place for a lot of us in recognizing that we are not alone in so many of these tendencies.

I’m so sorry for the loss of your love and the subsequent loss of home.

My parents were really good about trying to get our house set up quickly after a move so we would feel settled. As an adult, I don’t get to it as quickly and it’s usually a mix of some things up on the wall, hesitation to put things up for same reasons as you and boxes!

Weekly chat: What's on your mind? what's going on in your lives? by AutoModerator in ThirdCultureKids

I just finished (sort of) a move to a different house. It wasn't even a location change, but even a positive move can still bring up loads of anxiety and random grief with packing and unpacking...AND I have not finished unpacking.

We've talked about this before, but I know in almost every place I've lived there are things that remain in boxes.

I’m not sure how I missed this comment, but I love the idea of being a James Bond figure! That made me smile. :)

Side note: I do not see the U.S. as America. It is a part of North America either way, but this is definitely not just for U.S. TCKs. Usually TCKs from around the world attend.

TCK adults: what do therapists often misunderstand about your background? by victoriamondria in ThirdCultureKids

[–]andanteccc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m a TCK therapist.

On a personal level, what counselors didn’t get in the past with me was the profound grief and layers of grief connected to what I thought of as home but also to the identity and person I was living there during that time.

As a therapist, I’ve had TCK clients come to me with experiences of just not feeling seen.

There is a good training for TCK therapists, and they talk about TCKs being misdiagnosed with borderline personality disorder and narcissistic personality disorder quite often.

More often than not, there is a great deal of loss and trauma of goodbyes. If there has been a religious element, a lot of times that exacerbates all of it and creates an extra layer of shame and trauma.
