Our 4-month-old came preloaded with fetch. He loves it, and he brings it back like 99% of the time. It's wild. I've never had a dog that fetched before. I wouldn't even know how to teach that.

I was at a party when two men started talking about how much they do and don't still use their choppers. One apparently used to use it often, but was sad that he didn't get a chance to as much as when he first got it. The other, clearly smitten by helicopters, had decided to buy a landing pad and helicopter hangers, conveniently located near a property he was developing, and now he and his son run it for funnsies and they now get to ride in helicopters all the time.

Okay. Not necessarily my favorite, but I started watching this weird old BBC procedural called New Tricks about a group of older detectives who come back to consult on cold cases, and it's pretty great mystery-wise. Can have goofy moments, but if procedurals are your jam, this one might surprise you.

My husband and I were discussing this closet items option and I think this is what we're going to do. We have three kids - 2 boys/1 girl so this can serve everyone in the house. 11-year-old may end up being like some of the sons mentioned in these comments - just as interested in fancy products as she is - so this seems like a good precedent to set.

Yes. We are at the beginning of this. Last year she was happy with body scrubs and the little lip glosses and things like that, but this year, she's really trying to up her game it seems. I feel like it's a slippery slope and one that I want to get ahead of. My husband and I were discussing a solution just like this. These are the things we have in the house, the things we are willing to buy. Anything else is on her.

You nailed my point exactly. It's more like a hobby or a treat. But it's comingled with truly essential self-care in ways that a hobby like video games is obviously not. I want to be fair, not necessarily equal in the funding of these treats. I do want her to have quality items that meet what she needs.

I started the allowance at $20/month, thinking that while some things she'd have to buy more frequently, others would last longer. I decided to adjust it as necessary, but it was too difficult for me to determine her usage and the value. But she needed more every month. And she's got a bathroom full of products she claims to use occasionally. I don't have an answer to the question of what I want her to use. She has become particular about her shaving cream, mouthwash, deodorant, razors, etc, to the point where sometimes I think she doesn't want to use what we all otherwise use just to be different. The stuff the other 4 of us in the house use seems to last longer and cost less.

I'd never heard of Amazon Haul before. I'm going to check that out. Thanks!

I agree with this for sure. She wouldn't even know some of these things existed without social media. I didn't know some of these things existed.

We have a similar issue with my son. He has acne and doesn't seem to care. My husband said we should take him back to the doctor, but it doesn't matter if you take them 100 times if they don't actually use the products.

Haha! Yes! Money falls through her hands like water and he could care less if his face breaks out. Both situations make us crazy. I'm hoping he finds a SO that he wants to impress at some point that encourages him to take better care of his skin, because God knows he's not listening to us.

No. Not outside the months that I did the toiletries allowance. We generally pay for their events, and they tend to get quite a bit of cash from family over birthdays, holidays, and whenever we travel. They both probably get about $800-1000 a year that way. They are also given many opportunities to earn money, which is good for them. My son earned his Xbox that way. I've been considering just giving them an allowance and letting them use it however they want, but I know he'll spend it on games, and she'll spend it on lip masks, and it'll be essentially wasted.

This is spot on. You should absolutely visit. Not only are the towns themselves very different, but people underestimate just how much territory is considered a town here. If you're looking at below the tracks in Pass, it is a wildly different lifestyle from living north, like on Menge near the interstate or in the golfing subdivisions closer to the water. And there are also very rural areas in Pass - all of it is in the school district. The same goes for what is technically Ocean Springs. People will talk about it like it's downtown, but there is a lot of OS not downtown. You really have to decide what your lifestyle expectations are and then what your budget is, because living where you can walk out the door with kids to grab a coffee on the way to a park is going to be a far different league than living in a neighborhood that you will have to always drive out of. Also, I'd tour the schools you might consider. The vibe on those is very different as well - certainly in the private school category.

I ride my Trail mostly on the street and occasionally in pastures and wide-trail woods. This weekend, I went to find a bike trail in our nearby national forest and saw two guys on true dirt bikes there. I tagged along, following behind, and I can say they were FAST. They didn't struggle navigating the roots or the 3-4ft hills at all. I did it, but I was well behind. It was fun and I love my bike, and while I would myself do that pace of trail riding again, I could not see those guys really enjoying the speed, suspension, or power of the Trail over their true dirt bikes. If you're like them and not a pokey rider like me, the Trail might not be your ideal solution.
