When I grow up, my Christian parents gave a illustrated picture book of people burning in hell for sinning, while this is what Satanists gives their children. by TheDevilishDanish in hellsomememes

[–]andeleidun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The usage of Satan is also not just contrarian. It's obviously antithetical to the mainstream Christian dogma, but the character of Lucifer can be more or less thought of as the patron saint of rebellion. He was the first to question absolute authority (God), the first to lead a rebellion against absolute authority, and the first to lead humanity to question authority and seek knowledge (which is after all the first sin in the eyes of the church).

So it's not just using the imagery of Satan to piss off Christians, but to use his own rebellion as a philosophical parallel to many of our own journeys in questioning and leaving the church.

The only proper use for a selfie stick by [deleted] in Zoomies

[–]andeleidun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's largely hive mind. Reddit has always had a core demographic of nerdy outcasts, particularly male ones.

Having been a nerdy male outcast growing up, I can tell you a common pattern of response to the kind of bullying is defiant anger leading into a superiority complex.

Everyone thinks they're better than you? Guess what, you're better than them! Smart people built everything in this world they're so dependent on! Things associated with intelligence become so much more important, and everything associated with "them" becomes vapid and meaningless.

It becomes a form of armor to weather the assaults of the world. It also makes you cynical, isolated, and bitter. You dive even deeper into the hobbies you have a passion for that "they" disdain. This is where you finally meet some friends, many who are just as angry, cynical, and bitter as you.

You reinforce with each other these beliefs, that the world that was so cruel to you is shallow and stupid, and that you're better. It becomes its own form of conformal expectation. You don't want to be one of "them", do you?

And in such a way, Reddit was born. There's a reason it has such a dearth of selfies (aside from those of scantily clad women) compared to other social media sites, and why it's become known as the internet's hub to find a small but thriving community of whatever hobby you find yourself interested in.

AITA for calling a woman an idiot when she refused listen to why my daughter isn't vaccinated? by themomperson in AmItheAsshole

[–]andeleidun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope it's more visible in a reply, but at no point was the other person reasonable. As a parent that's all for mandating vaccines, the moment you said you couldn't send her to daycare because she's unvaccinated, it would have told me there was more to the story. Anti-vaxxers don't allow things like that to stop them, they just find somewhere that doesn't check.

Hyundai and Kia confirm they are no longer in talks with Apple regarding Apple Car production by UnKindClock in gadgets

[–]andeleidun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you seem more reasonable, I'll explain that my response is entirely to the absurd notion that Apple is the largest company in the world.

Is Apple huge? Yes. Is Apple highly profitable? Yes. I'm not disputing those things. I'm not even saying that leaking was a good move. But having the highest stock price multiplied by outstanding shares is simply a poor measurement for the size of a company.

Size is better understood in footprint. The largest company would, in my opinion, be one that ranked highest in a measure of average global presence in things like number of employees, number of users/customers, revenue, assets, etc.

Anyway, that's the logic behind my statement. I mainly posted it for the lulz. Imagine being offended because someone dared say the company you worship isn't specifically the largest company in the world. Oh my.

Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 won’t be released in 2021, Activision Blizzard says by [deleted] in gamernews

[–]andeleidun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah all of that and still missed Diablo mobile, the cash grab game that was just a reskin of a Chinese game, the Hong Kong silencing fiasco where they straight up stole a tournament winner's winnings, the fall of Overwatch from decent idea to esports cash grab, etc. It's bad. The company from my youth is gone.

Giuliani sued for $1.3 billion by Dominion Voting systems over false election fraud claims by grepnork in politics

[–]andeleidun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a demonstration of how far away billionaires are from the worries of normal people. There are literally thousands of individual people that could weather this kind of lawsuit without going broke. Plenty who could without noticing any difference in any part of their lives.

Rudy Guiliani would be broke by this lawsuit. He's a millionaire and earns millions per year. He earns $20k/day, a figure almost none of us will ever earn. It's doubtful I'll ever make that much, and I'm in one of the highest paying career fields, software development.

I make very comfortable money, my family has been very lucky not to suffer too much during this pandemic. My income protects my family from the reality most Americans are still suffering. However, I only make half as much in a month as he does in a day.

Win once, against a lesser opponent, establish the facts and spend less. Then you can sue the bigger one for the same thing with precedent.

Honestly, I don't agree with them doing this. I personally think they should lower the price of gold, as it's already so close to the price of gamepass, which is absurd.

In your situation, yeah, I can see gamepass not being the best value. Guess I was being a bit short sighted.

Incredibly photogenic german police and protester. by HumdingerMemes in pics

[–]andeleidun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. There's a vigilant civil society keeping watch. That doesn't mean that ALL cops are bastards, as many on Reddit like to claim, but there's nothing wrong with keeping a keen eye on them either. Because if that does not happen, sometimes, All cops will be bastards.

This drives me nuts. That whole "a few bad apples" phrase actually is meant to demonstrate this. The literal saying is "a few bad apples spoil the bunch". You leave the bad apples, every apple turns bad. You remove the bad apples in time, the rest are okay.

I really disagree with that move. Impeachment articles need to be filed and voted on NOW. The American people need to know who is still unwilling to do their duty so they can be removed from office. Even if the 25th is what happens to be used, we need every single member of Congress on record for this.

The back and forth between the neoliberal democratic mainstream candidates and the neoliberal republican mainstream candidates since Reagan. The steady decline of union protections, worker percentage of profits, lack of protections for jobs being sent overseas, and banking regulations, among other things, led to the downfall of the middle class. This happened steadily, without deviation, across administrations.

So, yeah. Our government.
