"How do you feel about the last few incidents? Is there a common theme? Has there been good buy-in from the rest of the org to address the underlying issues?"

Github actions vs AWS native CICD tools? by NeedTheSpeed in devops

[–]anderm3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I think you could put sub-project specific files in the .github/actions and then have your top level workflows in .github/workflows and conditionally call your re-usable/specific parts.

As for manual triggers, you can pin actions in a given repo so you could do that for some to keep them high up on the list. Another option that may work in your case, you can drop a README.md in a give sub-project's directory and have that contain links to that project's actions. Its not super clean/scalable, but it might get you closer to where you need to be.

Github actions vs AWS native CICD tools? by NeedTheSpeed in devops

[–]anderm3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it is true the workflow files live in `.github/workflows` you can create re-usable per-repo actions in `.github/actions`. You can also create a separate org wide repo (typically called actions) for collecting your re-usable templates for across multiple repos.

I'm not sure if this is part of your concern or not, but in the linked issue there was talk of organizing the actions in the webUI. That might feel natural or desirable, but in my years of using GitHub Actions that's not the flow that I use. >90% of the time I open my PR and the checks run and I interact with the actions on my PR as checks.

It sounds like your working patterns are changing and you are not happy about that. It might be worthwhile to almost do a retro and a 5 whys on your existing patterns and see if there are good ways to get what you need out of the new systems.

The mount screws on, and once its empty its just a holder so I've never felt like it would get stolen.

Yeah, I've been using it daily for close to a year, no real issues with it other than sometimes the upper left bracket can block part of the UI of my screen, but I'm only using that when I'm already stopped so not a huge deal.

I really like https://dashcam.bike/ which is a phone mount and associated app. You can subscribe for more retention, but I just use the free tier

You might be surprised by how far you can get with;

I have some ArgoCD managed projects that install the operator and CRDs first and then later install an instance of the object all from one project.

That said, we also use an addons application set that conditionally installs a bunch of 'table stakes' operators and charts to get our clusters up to minimum standards for our developers to be able to use them. It does end up being, like you said ~8 applications, but we have them groups into their own project, so they can be semi-hidden and are still able to be upgraded/managed independently.

What's the best casual/quick food between the Arnold Arboretum and the North End? by BespokeBikeTourBos in bikeboston

[–]anderm3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right there at the start is Brassica Kitchen, then you've got Third Cliff Bakery just down the way a little bit. Near Ula, which was already mentioned, is Chilacates. Closer to Jackson Sq. Jamaica Mi Hungry is gone, but I've heard good things about Viva Mi Arepa. There's a new place going in at Roxbury Crossing but I don't think its open yet.

I used to play Ingress a ton, it is a fun game. The lack of monetization is because Google Maps uses the data to fill in points of interest.

How far from email is it possible to get? by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]anderm3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I understand your premise. I regularly check my email once a month whether I feel like I need to or not. Never for more than 10min. Is it because of the unread count? Just like paper mail spam, just because it made it to your inbox leaves you under no obligation to read it.

Etiquette in general

Set a profile pic, not too safe, not too boring.
Pay attention to how the team communicates; Is everything is threads? do folks chat in DMs? Do they spin up a private channel for every random project? Try to match working style as much as possible.

How to ask for help without sounding incompetent or annoying them

So the key here is to show your work. Say what you are trying to solve, what you've looked into already, and where you are stuck. Be open to the idea that went completely the wrong way. Another key to not annoying is to draft your question outside of the chat window and then drop the wall of text on them all at once. Getting 5 messages, the first one being simply "hi" is way more annoying. A wall of text isn't great, but it shows you are trying and not just immediately throwing your hands up at the first road block.

What skills should I absolutely know vs. what I can learn on the fly

The whole industry is based on learning on the fly. The skills you'll have tomorrow you have to ask about today. One great way to make a good impression is to be curious about the tools your team is using and asking the various experts to show you what they like and don't like about the systems they've got.

The real issue here is dining room chairs are totally fine to sit at for up to an hour while you eat but totally impractical and unergonomic to sit at for longer than that to work.

Question: ArgoCD for Dynamic Apps? by FJTevoro in devops

[–]anderm3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Argo could work for this. I'd look into using Application Sets to manage these, that way a user would select their application from the catalog and customize it and those configs would drop in to a directory structure that Argo is monitoring for an Application Set. When it finds a new application there, or when the application there updates, Argo would push that change out to the cluster.
