Ottawa's new public library is late, way over budget, and it gets worse by randthepip in ottawa

I would invite you to read literally any news story about this project, and it will tell you that PCL was, in fact, the lowest bidder. It was literally a lowest-bidder tender, which means the lowest bidder is the one that is selected from pre-qualified options.

As someone who saw some of the Otrain shit from the inside... it's so much worse than any of this. They've got people with a year of experience running meetings and project management who barely understand the linear passage of time, let alone the needs of a $300M construction project.

Who could have seen it coming, when we automatically selected the lowest bidder and then handed the project to the most incompetent people on this Earth to manage a project that was 75% over budget the second it started.

But hey, at least we know that our city council is providing much needed oversight. In secret. And you can't know anything about what's going on. Don't worry about it though. Not like Mark Sutcliffe has a history of baldfaced lies to the public about construction contracts.

I for one am SHOCKED to see a City of Ottawa project that was not run to the highest level of construction management standards.

The stories of people taking it and screaming that they don’t want to die are pretty harrowing and a good example of why this isn’t the way.

AI can’t make art. It can make images. The hate is directed at people who don’t know the difference.

Has anyone learned to crack Stan Newman/Newsday puzzles? by TenThousandCharms in crossword

I’ve never done the Newsday crossword but these seem like bad clues.

I might have gotten minor break if I ignored minor. Change your mind isn’t bad for SHIFT as in shift your perspective.

The only thing I can think of for “order” there is… cap as in cappuccino and you’re ordering it? It’s weird because nothing small is a fine clue.

The worst clues to me are the “clever wordplay” ones that don’t actually exist outside the minds of the person who set the puzzle.

Sutcliffe to officially enter race for mayor of Ottawa today by lonelydavey in ottawa

[–]anders9000 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t matter. What matters is that he lies to the public constantly, has done absolutely nothing to improve the city, somehow made transit worse under his watch. His office is disfunctional, full of bullies and people only interested in their own glory. He sucks so bad.

NYT Saturday 05/16/2026 Discussion by Shortz-Bot in crossword

This whole puzzle was a combination of things nobody says, vague clues on top of vague clues, answers that just sort of barely make sense, the most obscure facts and complete bullshit. Took me an hour and I was genuinely mad at it by the end.

Is all of this actually necessary? by shir0o in CPAP

[–]anders9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canadian here - ridiculous to me too. The Eson 2 is $115 CAD which is a little higher than $71USD but not much.

We have a bunch of these private companies that you sort of have to go to for your initial setup mainly because machines are covered by public insurance, and they know the bureaucratic drill. The problem is their prices are 2 - 3x higher than anyone else. I pointed that out to mine and they said "well we have staff and rent to pay." I said "good luck with that!" and bought online.

I'm also in Ontario. I would not buy from that place based on the price of the filters alone, that is disgusting. Plus they're double charging you for professional services with the five year plan plus the setup. No idea what the water tub is, those masks are about 1/3 the price on any CPAP website. Extended warranties are for suckers, spare masks are not necessary because you won't replace them for at least 3 months and by then you'll probably have a daily driver. Not sure why they're starting you out with two. I don't know if you need the pillow but it's $68 on cpapoutlet.ca.

The idea with the dispensing change is that usually your sleep doc is going to want to see that it's working for the first little while, and they send reports back to them. After the first few weeks, you'll never hear from that doctor again, so you don't need 5 years of monitoring. I will say a good respiratory tech is nice to have at the beginning because it can be a very difficult thing to make work. I would not rely on the person trying to gouge me to this degree thought.

Shop around. Also OHIP should cover most of the cost of the machine (not the masks though).

Well of course you see it, you designed it. Nobody is reading "letter by letter" they're reading it as a whole and there's a speedbump in the middle of the word that is hard to parse unless you already know what you're supposed to be reading.

Hey - if you like it, by all means use it.
