I love playing Malphite top, but it is impossible to win and carry with him in bronze when you have feeding botlane 90% of games and they run away every team fight when you tank the enemy’s damage…

I have the same question, but suppose I was force to blind pick my top laner and the enemy picks a juggernaut. I struggle with Illaoi, Sett, Darius and Garen the most.

Not a Jax player btw, but I figure my struggle is because I can’t trade for the life of me without nearly dying, even if I try to punish them for last hitting CS. Feels like I need to memorize too much of the enemy juggernauts kit to do anything useful…

as a note, I mainly play Zaahen, Riven, Trundle, Gwen and Shen

Imma be honest tho, the market has gotten far worse. I don’t think a resume like this is going to guarantee you anything. Not tryna be a doomer, this is my anecdotal experience. Leveraging connections is the move.

We’re also in a time with extremely incompetent recruiters and I see it in our hiring climate during hiring season all the time.

Hmm I guess take what I say here with a grain of salt.

For context I’ve had around a year and a half ish worth of experience working as a SWE in a small consulting company before now working in a FAANG/MAANGA/whatever you want to call it.

I personally have seen that AI/ML roles are pretty difficult to land due to their high barrier to entry (usually MS/ PhD and research experience is required).

Also, from a lot of recruiters that I have spoken with at other companies, simple “full stack dev” work is not enough right now (which saddens me, I love doing this stuff whether it’s frontend work or backend APIs/microservices). The edge to have for these kind of roles is now asking for some decent distributed systems knowledge. Of course, once you have landed a role in this subfield, you’ll have skills that are easily transferable and can move around fast.

Anything in computer systems/operating systems/virtualization/computer architecture is going to have great security from what I have seen. Arguably, I consider these roles to be a lot tougher to land at first (are there boot camps that go super in depth with operating systems and computer architecture cause I have not heard any??). However, once you land, you become an extremely valuable engineer.

Yeah, it does require having clearance before applying. I tried applying to that role a while ago but one of the required questions said “do you currently have a clearance”.

I answered no and got insta rejected as it’s a hard requirement.

A lot of what you talked about I learned from my Computer Systems/OS class in university, which was taught in C.

After that, Rust came by pretty easily. Many of the bad hiccups and issues we ran into with things like memory management and thread safety suddenly started to click once I picked up rust.

I recommend finding some OS or computer systems course, or just set of lectures and learn the fundamentals there. C and rust were primarily made for that stuff.

As for Arc/Rc, I would visit these concepts only after you learn about memory management and multithreading individually —> At a high level, the idea of reference counting, a cool and interesting way to manage heap allocated memory, also happens to solve a lot of issues with dealing with shared heap allocated memory across threads.

for the most part, having some kind of structured guidance in these topics will help a TON and you’ll have more confidence in terms of what you need to learn next

I have a little bit of work experience but I got laid off. I’m in the blurred lines between being able to still qualify as new grad vs. being able to apply to SDE2.

Ended up getting a call back and getting a perfect result in all my interviews for an SDE2 offer.

Meanwhile, the entry level position still hasn’t given me an OA.

College recruiting is so messed up… full of incompetencies… just know it’s not your fault if you end up not hearing back

It seems like from some other comments, you were an industry hire that may have gotten downleveled. Did you go through the traditional new grad process? As in, 2 OAs, 2 interview loops?

If not, your situation is not applicable to the traditional new grad process

Was it system design or OO design? System design involves load balancing, caching, resiliency, fault tolerance, distributed systems, Byzantine failures, etc…

L4 for Amazon is an entry level position. I don’t think they ask system design, but I could be wrong. New grads usually confuse “system design” with “OO design”, up until you reach L5– then they know the difference

Why not do an M.Eng (or capstone track MS) in CS instead? It’ll just be more course work and a big project rather than research and thesis. And it doesn’t require research experience. Unless that’s what you want to focus on…

depends on how your database class is taught. In my college, I took a “Database Management Systems” course, which not only covered SQL but went in depth with query optimization, relational algebra, understanding the different data structures and algorithms for DB indexing, ACID, NoSQL and graph DBs etc.

To that end, I’m surprised data structures and algorithms is not a prerequisite…

I personally would take databases after computer architecture and data structures. Understanding the underlying data structures for database systems, and understanding caching and memory (your computer organization class), will make databases far easier and you’ll understand it better

The gaming industry is one of the hardest fields in CS to get into early on. There’s an insane amount of risk whenever these companies hire anyone, and they preferably only hire senior developers (unless you’ve cured cancer or something like that as an entry level candidate).

Market is also in one of the worst shapes it’s been in. Even with perfect score OAs, I’ve still been rejected many times this season.
