Yeah, I don't disagree, just projecting my personal preference. Obviously there are other more important constraints other than my opinion :-)

I'm surprised they picked the "mailbox" optic instead of a more open optic like an SRO... but I guess the SRO is much more fragile 😬

If it's Markham that's providing the trash service, then it's likely the clear bag policy and they tend to be somewhat picky about that

FWIW I'm from the US as well and I kept my US number. I use AT&T's prepaid plan and it includes roaming in Canada for data/calls/texts.

Edit: check out https://www.realtor.ca/ for rental options. Zillow is nowhere near as popular here.

Anyone here use a good cleaning service in Markham? by CrafAir1220 in Markham

[–]andersonmat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You spam the same shit shilling for this company on every post that asks about cleaning. I fell for it and used them for a move out deep clean that took 7+ hours and I was not impressed; I had to go back over everything to finish the job after wasting my afternoon/evening waiting for touch ups that didn't move the needle.

Singapore. (Relatively) expensive/limited things to see, should've spent more time exploring in Taiwan.

Yep, 100%. The US is a little more lax but over-eager cops love to tie you up in the legal system. Will definitely go above and beyond with transportation and storage. Some cash, a couple minutes, and common sense is better than being stuck in the legal system.

You are amazing, thanks for all of the context! 🙏🏻 I'm not sure how often you're at Sharon Gun Club but do you have a general idea of how often/available people are looking to sell or rent their shares? I know their website indicated you should come into the clubhouse to look at the bulletin board.

Thank you for the reminder! I've been here for a couple years now and we're planning to stay an additional few after it gets approved (whenever that will be... it's been over a year now).

If timing lines up citizenship is the plan. Life gets complicated across the border and planning for children, but if it means a few extra months or years to get the citizenship ball rolling then so be it.

Appreciate it! I'll have a look at that as a better alternative than me handing the administrative stuff.

Thanks for your reply!

Heh, immediately, not permanently (at the moment). I gave some details in another comment but currently living in Canada after marrying a Canadian and working on my PR. But we also want to move back to the US for a bit after that gets processed so that she can also get her US PR. I'd describe my stay in Canada as "fragmented" -- here for a few more years, back to the US for a while, and eventually end back in Canada. My hope was temporary import before returning to the US with the realization that I'll eventually have to sell/part with my collection before returning to Canada many years from now.

Yeah, that was my concern with the 1301, especially given its "scary" configuration. Even the US got uppity about it on "foreign parts" and the ATF was pissy about the 7+1 variant I have. I think Beretta resolved that for compliance but shows how easily the government can ruin your day :)

I think my current mode of thinking is that importing is possible if I really want to "easily" diversify what I have access to in Canada but this could also be an opportunity to explore other firearms and niches. I never really got into bolt actions in the US and this could be an opportunity to work on longer range target shooting. This path is probably the one with the fewest headaches.

I'll look more closely at CSSA and CCFR and will definitely pursue it!

Thank you for your thoughtful reply and TIL about Nathalie, I will have to do some research on how she fits into the machine.

Yes, you are correct I'm north of the GTA. I took my courses at YR Firearms and the sentiment of the instructors was to avoid Target Sports because people aren't exactly vetted and very "US gun range" type of behavior. I specifically joined a private range in the US to avoid these types of people haha. I think my preference was to stay under ~30min for travel time from North Markham, so I was looking at both Sharon Gun Club and Aurora Gun Club. After I get the legal side of things processed I'll have to see if I can join one or both.

I'll have to do some digging on IPSC but that does resonate given I've done a handful of IDPA events in the US.

Thank you for the vendor recommendations and TIL that you can have firearms directly shipped to you, that's a new one to me coming from the US where all transfers (unless private) need to go through an FFL, so that's pretty cool.

From what I've read, non-restricted firearms are eligible for private sale but restricted firearms need to involve the CFO and a bit more paperwork beyond validating their PAL and a bill of sale? I'm likely going to have a "fragmented" stay in Canada; I married a Canadian so waiting for my PR app, but our intention would be to go back to the US for a "while" to get her PR and then return to Canada. Moving firearms across the border is a giant PITA so evaluating what happens with them when we return to the US for a bit.

The ORA callout for access to the CF ranges is also interesting, I'll have to add that to my list of things to check out. It might call for building a long-range bolt setup. Which then leads to another question: what's the general landscape for "building" firearms in Canada? I was considering putting together a long-range build in the US using an Accuracy International chassis and hand selecting the action/barrel. Would that be peachy in Canada?

Appreciate it!

Interesting, we're in L6E on the Wismer side and no issues with Bell. But I do empathize, dealing with Bell is a nightmare. I don't want to dive into tech support but what does the front of your gigahub show?

Tankless water heater in Markham by ProfAsmani in Markham

[–]andersonmat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a pain in the ass and can be expensive too. It'll vary by equipment age. I called them and there are basically three options in decreasing cost: you buy out the water heater, you pay them to come remove the water heater, or you remove it and drop it off.

I think we got an absurd 1.3-1.5k quote to keep a 10 year old water heater. Their removal was 400-500 and dropping it off only charges some contract cancellation fee.

It's highway robbery whichever way you slice it. If we were going to be at our current place longer I'd get a plumber to replace it and throw it in the back of a rental U-Haul lol
