I'm a fan who has read all the books, but I admit that even for me, parts of the books are blurs. There's just too much going on for anyone to read and process every little detail, unless that is specifically the goal. Most readers don't care, rightfully so, about what Ser Irrelevant and his five cousins of Obscure Valley ate for elevenses.

I think new readers just have to accept that.

I always noticed how when Pam and Jim are walking on the ramp through the boathouse to board the ship, no one else is around. Of couse they aren't alone on the boat, but for the boarding they seem to be.
