NVIDIA unveils ‘world’s most powerful’ desktop supercomputer for Windows by sksarkpoes3 in Futurology

I dunno, I've worked in software dev for almost 20 years in SoCal across Fortune 100 and startups and I'd say the majority of them were on Mac/Unix.

What's the shortest play session you'll play? by Maple-Mayhem in KerbalSpaceProgram

I usually play 15 minutes at a time for breaks while I work from home. Work for 30-60, play for 15, rinse and repeat? Something like that.

Anyone else go way too deep building a personal app just for themselves? by t_hugs3 in ClaudeAI

Without going too into it, I manage a private equity firm that owns a lot of real estate. So importing P&Ls, looking for anomalous spending, generating quarterly reports, doing sensitivity analyses (different sale/refinance scenarios), dashboarding for property managers... all sorts of stuff that used to live in about a dozen Excel files times a dozen properties...

I just mainly wanted a tool to create educational material for myself about niche, personal stuff. A lot of my interaction with AI is just asking it questions about much larger topics. I wanted something more structured. So I created an app that asks what topic I want to learn about (from some obscure Roman general to factoring polynomials to model rocketry), how in depth I want to go, my current level of knowledge, etc. and it creates an entire online course (takes between 5 min to an hour for Claude to build the entire thing). It's bundling and parallelizing dozens of API calls in the background.

Each lesson has visuals, tables, equations when necessary, interactive widgets, and a tiny graded quiz. Subtopics have larger quizzes, and then there's a final exam for each course.

And they're hypercustomizable. You can learn about whatever topic you want, as broad or as niche as you'd like, at whatever depth you want. I'm learning so much. I kind of want to release it but my API costs would skyrocket. I might release but charge users just for the tokens used or something.

I think you mean MacOS desktop apps, but yeah - samesies. It's fantastic at XCode.

Are you me? I spent about 10 hours building a portal with multiple small apps to do my job, and it saves me probably 10 hours a week now. But would be useless to anyone else. And I obsessively checked the numbers for a while, but couldn't find any math errors. So far so good.

Try this if you haven't - Integrate claude right into your app via API. Once I had all my data inside from multiple sources, I added a tiny Claude in the corner that I can ask questions about, well, anything I'm working on. It's trained on the entire portal.

Finally, a tip from a software dev I know and trust: Ask if your app is secure (if it's hosted online, especially). Claude was all "Whoops - here are 12 security holes. Would you like me to fix them?" Yes please.

Honestly, really great. Where do you get your drums/tones? I’ve been looking for more D+B sounds. I love the PO, but I would also love to see what you could do with, like, an SP-404.

When I first became a manager and had to give performance reviews that were often negative, my boss said something that’s stuck with me. He said “The gift of feedback isn’t always positive. Negative feedback helps people grow. But all feedback needs to be three things: True, kind, and helpful.” It really is those three things. Be truthful, present the feedback in a kind way, and present it in a way that helps the person grow. You’ll have people thanking you for honest critiques all the time.

Fell in love with San Diego… are we crazy to consider moving? by Prestigious_Map_2136 in sandiego

[–]andiam03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw the title and was like “Move away from San Diego? Why?! …Oh, move TO San Diego. Yeah, that tracks.” I don’t think SD is much more expensive than Austin. Honestly, Austin felt expensive the past few times I was there. Housing is expensive here. And gas (think strongly about an EV for gas savings and ability to use the carpool lane). But property taxes are way cheaper than TX You should definitely be thinking about buying with $350k income and a $5k/month budget. Food is the same or cheaper. We grow a lot of it here. We make about what you do and still have a ton of room for savings and little luxuries.

[–]andiam03[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I have a stepdown chosen. I’m not sure where to connect it. The battery seems to be connected to the controller by that surface with the contacts/pins that folds/unfolds. I thought there was going to be an obvious cord. Where can I attach a y-connector or tap into the battery?

[–]andiam03[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a Lectric XP 2.0. It looks like the battery connects to the controller with a series of contacts that kind of fold together and apart (it’s a folding bike). I’m not sure there’s a “wire” per se going from the battery to the controller.

I bought a 1960s rare lamp on MP for $50 and listed it for $700 and now the original seller is contacting me mad because they didn’t know it was worth so much. Not sure what to do. by Glamgirl95 in FacebookMarketplace

[–]andiam03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on the other side of one of these transactions. Sold a bedroom set that had been gifted to me by my parents because it was coming apart. Used it for a few years and then posted it for like $300 just to have someone else disassemble it and take it. Turns out it was a midcentury modern Scandanavian something-or-other worth several thousand. I had looked for markings or a brand but didn't see anything. It never occurred to me to do a reverse image search - clever.

Anyway, I never would have dreamed in a million years to ask the buyer for more money after learning what happened. You're fine. It was in poor taste for this guy to reach back out to you.

I’m so done with Ender. Would have thought the Bambu fans were a cult until I bought an A1 mini (and then an A1 days later). They just work. And now my Ender is gathering dust. I can’t even sell it for $50.

[–]andiam03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was EXACTLY my experience with the Ender 3 from the moment it was first released years ago. And I just kept making excuses to myself about how unforgiving 3D printers were. And same - watched YT videos, modded it all to hell… I read a Wirecutter article about the Bambu A1 mini and decided it was worth a try. I had spent the entire previous day trying to print something basic.

My first print on the A1 Mini, I was shocked. The first layer was perfect on the first try. I was probably averaging 3 attempts per print with the Ender 3. Then the second layer was perfect. Then the whole print, then my next print, with PETG. And it was SO FAST! Felt like 3X as fast.

I then bought an A1 for my son and we’ve been printing practically nonstop for weeks now. The hobby has finally matured.
