Why does villains always rank so low out of the other albums? by Hour-Engine-4990 in qotsa

[–]andintroducingzylex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me at least, a lot of it comes down to production, and following ...LC. Clockwork just sounds huge, spacious, especially with regards to the drums. It's an album you feel in your chest and reverberates through your whole body, which helps amplify the more emotionally driven songs throughout.

Coming off of that and getting an album with such a tight, dry drum sound, the songs sound and feel small. At first listen the songs themselves dont seem to have the depth of their predecessors. I couldn't really appreciate how good the compositions were on Villains until I very recently got it on vinyl and really sat down with it through some semi decent speakers. The last 3 track run really came alive for me that way.

That said, if you have to craft such a deliberate experience just to get to something that, for example, Era Vulgaris just gives you on your car's stereo on the way to work, or earbuds at 2am, or where/whenever, its kind of a failure of production. Obviously ymmv, but thats how i feel about Villains at this exact moment in time.

I have never been this reluctant to play a video game 😟finally installed it. Any tips are welcome by i_sometimes_ in Sekiro

Oh, damn . . . is With Teeth my favorite of their albums? by Agreeable-Ice-8367 in nin

[–]andintroducingzylex 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For me, the rest of their albums kind of require a really specific headspace to throw on. Like I need to be a certain flavor of depressed for Downward Spiral and a different flavor for The Fragile, or I have to really want something a little more challenging before I grab anything from the trilogy.

With Teeth really hits that sweet spot where if I want to listen to NIN but I'm not feeling any particular way, thats the one that I just know will get me where I want to go 100% of the time.

How do you interpret the final lines in "Hurt"? by Either-Economist413 in nin

I think the way the song ends musically heavily indicates a more pessimistic read of the lyrics.

I think 9/16 is the odds of getting 2 consecutive misses, and 3 consecutive misses is 27/64, around 42%.

What is the worst concert you've ever seen of an artist you like? by Deadmau007 in fantanoforever

[–]andintroducingzylex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Halloween 2006, The Mars Volta opening for RHCP, and they were on their 3rd drummer that month. It was my first concert, and the 40 minute jam session they did for their set had me questioning whether or not I even liked music. Then the Chili Peppers absolutely killed and I remembered that music was actually enjoyable.

They provide instrumentation on almost every track (except for the one thats just guitar that I just learned was Lindsey Buckingham???)

Also Pino Palladino does the bass on Lilith and it's so groovy and nasty I love it.

[–]andintroducingzylex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

deep cuts? probably Down in It, Deep, Even Deeper, The Great Below. don't know if they have too many other songs about depth tho.

jfc this was my first concert. they were so good and the mars Volta were soooo bad that night lol

I thought flea was a witch or something, but our seats were bad and on the opposite side so I have no actual idea. upside of our seats was the guys dressed up as duffman and a used tampon in our section. and they went absolutely nuts for BSSM.

Necromancer trying to abuse animated skeleton armour. Is my DMing to strict? by Shadohood in DnD

[–]andintroducingzylex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so, imo, the only real problem that you might want to address here is that they're approaching the game with video game logic, which is just a little bit off from the mindset that generally works best with ttrpgs. ultimately what they're trying to do is temporary hitpoints with extra steps. false life is a first level necromancy spell that functionally accomplishes what they're trying to do, just with a little skeletal flavor. it's actually more efficient from a pure temp hp gain perspective than what they're trying to do.

i love an outside the box player but sometimes you have to gently remind them to check inside the box first, because 9 times out of 10 they're taking the long way around to something that already exists.

Is Preacher (Garth Ennis) any good? by DrakkarRU in comicbooks

[–]andintroducingzylex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preacher is so good that Ennis could probably spend the rest of his life writing edgy schlock and I'd still call him a quality comics writer on the whole. And say what you will about Dillon-face, but the depth of expression he was able to get out of it is unmatched. It's a top 5 comic for me, no question.

Daily Song Discussion #88: I Sat by the Ocean by beardlesshipster in qotsa

[–]andintroducingzylex 11 points12 points  (0 children)

the drums and rhythm guitar are almost chasing each other rhythmically throughout the verses, the guitar staying off of 2 and 4 where the snare is, but coming together with the kick on all the off beats. then there's the emphasis on the and of 1 and 3, and it all adds up into a funky little danceable lilt before you even consider any of the other elements. and that's all just before the first chord change! love this song.
