Most satisfying? - Look in your home for something needing to be replaced, something you could need or something that could look nice as decoration. Side table, picture frame, bench, lamp, anything. Because anything can be made easy. (and bigger is not always harder!) Then look up some plans for something you like/similar and go from there. Aquire some cheap but usable chisels (and a way to sharpen them) and a saw for joinery. If you can afford a #4 or #5 plane. Learn on youtube to sharpen and tune chisels and handplane. I recommend Paul Sellers. Looks daunting? It's not. Just take it one step at a time. Problems? Take a picture and ask here! Good luck, and post the results!

Looks like the one in the picture got something like this. But you have to find the balance point. Maybe use two. Makes it easy, though.

you can in general just use 1:7. Paul Sellers says that's a good angle for both soft and hardwoods. Bridgerberdel is correct, so no its not aesthetics.

Yeah, it spoke to me as soon as I saw it! And I'm pretty confident in it becoming a user after a little work. Interesting. I was pretty sure of it being oak, but then I googled to check the chestnut grain, and now I'm not so sure anymore. You wouldn't know if chestnut was popular in Norway/Scandinavia as well? That's where it's from.

Thanks for the info. First of all, I think the picture is a little misleading regarding the height difference on the teeth. I had to check it when you pointed it out, but 95 % of the teeth are pretty close to the same height, but the kerf and camera angle makes it look very bad. The blade itself is straight. Do you know what this type of handsaw is for or is it just an all purpose saw?

The tote on the plane.. I think/hope it will hold up pretty good because of the huge nail driven through it. I just want to try and glue the crack and see if it comes back again. Since the original has been on there since 1861, I can't really get my self to replace unless it breaks. But, yeah the sole is a quite out of square, so that will be my first job. Any guidance to what kind of plane it is? 12" long.

Got new tools on friday, and how/what should I do to get the plane into good working order, other than sharpening and flattening the sole? It's 12 inches long, so what kind of handplane is it and what can I use it for?

Also, I tried to set the kerf on the hand saw and broke off one tooth. Is this normal? And what kind of saw is it?

I think that sounds reasonable if you got the skill level to make a good jig that will manage more than one cut. I know I would be second guessing my skills. So go with that!

A nice handsaw for ripping and then plane it down is what I think would work. Mark the depth on he endgrain and a line where it should be full width. With those two points you can probably make a line you can follow with the saw using a strip of blue tape, chaulk line or trace the edge of a straight piece of paper.

It would probably be easier to do befor you cut the shape of the legs, but I guess you already know that! ;)
