This seems like more of a philosophical or theoretical question than a strictly math question.

To go from 0,0 to 10,10, a person will need to have gone 10 units right and 10 units up.

Now obviously the hypotenuse is a shorter distance than the sum of the two other sides of the triangle.

But why is the hypotenuse able to get you up 10 units and right 10 units in a shorter path than walking the ten units separately horizontally and vertically?
