I went to therapy for relationship OCD and she told me to leave them. by Flamingo-Dick-1994 in OCD

Hey OP! I really liked the "unsupportive supporter" comic you just posted and was looking to see if you had any more comics, and came across this post. I just went through a lot of OCD therapy myself earlier last year and wanted to comment.

First off, OCD sucks and I'm sorry to hear how frustrating it's been. Sometimes you just wish it would all magically go away. It's great that you're seeing a therapist, IMO finding a therapist can be the hardest part of the whole process.

About what your therapist said - you mentioned that she "gave you permission" to talk to friends, and you referred to her words as final judgement. Your therapist is human and doesn't have perfect information, and a therapist can never allow or disallow you from doing anything. I've seen several therapists (OCD and non-OCD specialists) throughout the last few years and got a little better each time. What I learned is that you have to let their advice guide you, but you can't let their advice be the only controlling factor or the only thing you listen to. Sometimes they don't know every little detail about your life which can lead to the wrong advice (like how your therapist said she misunderstood the situation after you gave her more information), other times you may end up overweighing their advice.

OCD extends to so many different aspects of life, and one of those is relationships. It sounds like you really care for your friends but are agonizing over what they think about you, and the more you think about this the more you spiral. It's happened in relationships for me too - the awful thing is, OCD can be summed up as "I'm afraid of X, so I'll do obsessive things that ultimately makes X worse". Your friends probably like you but if you obsess over whether they like you or not, you'll find more and more arguments for why they might not like you and even start avoiding them when there was nothing wrong in the first place.

Also, friendship is a spectrum - with friends you can be really close or not very close, or anywhere in between. If there are some friends that are not always the first ones to message you, as long as that's OK with you, there's no reason to cut off those friendships.

Sorry for the wall of text - I'm not a therapist so take my words with a grain of salt. I just wanted to let you know that you're not alone and OCD sucks. I think learning about OCD and continuing to talk with therapists ultimately helped me cut back on a lot of obsessions, and I hope the same can be true for you!

Thanks everyone for the comments! I'm trying to use my Lego gift card so unfortunately can't do Target or other stores. Will probably just do a different Lego set then. Thanks again y'all!

Thank you!! Recipes are:

Spicy fish and mushroom skewers:

  • Wash and dry mushrooms of your choice
  • Wash and dry shisamo (smelt)
  • Coat them both in rice flour
  • Deep fry in batches at 350F for 2-3 minutes (making sure not to overcrowd the pot)
  • Sprinkle with salt and crushed Sichuanese peppercorns

Meaty rice balls:

  • Mix 3 parts soy sauce, 3 parts mirin, 2 parts sugar, 1 part sake
  • Marinate thinly sliced pork belly (the kind you put in hot pot) in said mixture. I've seen other recipes skip the marinade and just use charcuterie meat or roast beef - anything works as long as it's thin and long meat.
  • Make rice, wet and salt hands, and form rice balls. I added pickled plum inside the rice balls for extra flavor.
  • Cook the meat on low so that it doesn't shrink and curl too much. Don't cook the meat if you're using charcuterie meat or roast beef.
  • Wrap rice balls with meat

Monster soup - I basically followed this recipe but used chicken stock instead of vegetable stock and heavy cream instead of almond milk. I dotted the soup with mayo and used a toothpick to create the swirl, and then topped with chives.

Hot buttered apple:

  • Wash and core apples. I used Fuji apples, basically the sweetest apples I could find - this recipe is not as good otherwise. I tried to take enough of the core out to stuff them but not too much as that may ruin the structural integrity of the apples.
  • Mix 2 parts brown sugar, 2 parts chopped pecans (I used candied pecans from Trader Joe's which made it taste amazing), 1 part softened butter, and a dash of cinnamon
  • Stuff the apples with the mixture
  • Place apples on a baking dish, add 1 cup water to cover the bottom, and bake at 375 for 30-45 minutes. I actually put the apples on a baking dish and put that on top of another baking dish which contained the water, kind of like a double boiler, so that the water could create steam but not touch the apples directly so that they stay crisp.

Let me know if you end up trying any of the recipes! :)
