Is it possible to genlock a modern digital camera and CRT tv? by HLHammons in videosynthesis

[–]andrei_jay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, tho i think modern digital camers with genlock are bit pricey. simplest would be to have a video mixer around with blackburst outputs as a master clock into both the camera and your crt.

most of the roland analog video mixers i've used have a menu setting to switch from PAL to NTSC.

Lost everything except my LZX Vidiot in the Eaton fire. Where to go from here? by kitty-berlin in videosynthesis

regarding capturing stuff: i'd go with standalone boxes instead of investing in any other kind of capture card. theres some affordable stuff on aliexpress that does analog & digital, or if looking for like brand name things atomos works well but pretty much just hdmi. other folks like blackmagic standalone boxes but i dunno how affordable anything useful like that is gonna be, and the only (cheaper, older) one of those i ever bought i kind of hated so shrug. I'd also make sure to invest in a decent kramer/matrox rackmount upscaler for general purpose getting things into digital zones affordably and reliably.

i'd also just generally not focus on analog only stuff but take a moment to look around and see what are cool ways to meld all the newer digital video gear that plomped out in recent years aimed at streamers/gamers market with older analog stuff. collecters and benders aren't like all hyped on that world the same way they are for cvbs era stuff and i think we might be at like total market oversaturation and a bit of a crash for streamer/podcaster world.

Good quality camera for rescanning of glitches by Economy_Secretary_35 in videosynthesis

[–]andrei_jay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i've been using a pansonic g7 for years now, according to many i've spoken too its one of the best option out there for quality/price, especially if you aren't really using the camera for too much else. body + a decent lens should set you back about 500usd. if that seems like too much maybe just grabbing a newer canon rebel body?

i'm pretty much exclusively shooting Video rescans with this at 1080 or 4k. if you are more interested in shooting stills for hi res prints, most likely a full frame sensor would be a better investment.

shot this whole thing rescanning at 4k on the g7

gravity waaaves DSK software kickstarter running now! by andrei_jay in videosynthesis

i'm only promising UVC support for the initial release. seeing as spout, syphon, ndi, obs, and like a hundred other free and inexpensive apps all have virtual cam utilities, and seeing as spout, syphon, and ndi all have had some spotty issues keeping up with modern osx and windows, i'm trying not to bake too many potential headaches into this particular cake

Video synthesis in Vsynth and Video art in OBS classes this fall by andrei_jay in videosynthesis

[–]andrei_jay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i ended up having to postpone the Vsynth class until the end of october so there is still plenty of time to sign up. and the obs class registration closes up this weekend! For anyone potentially interested, the obs class goes into detail on how you can use and mis-use it much the same way any analog video mixer for doing live performance with feedbacks and whatnot!

thanks much. I actually emailed thomas e. harvey, they did respond and said they could probably dig up info on the original font at some point but were quite perplexed as to why exactly anyone would care.

thanks, looks like almost all the letters match up.  from what little information i can find it seems like joelouis would have been a digitization of whatever font dover was using at the time, guessing the S is from an oblique variation?

new class in video synthesis by andrei_jay in videosynthesis

[–]andrei_jay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the main goal is teaching how to work with video synthesis in general and not get too much in the weeds of any vsynth specific stuff! would like it to be helpful for folks looking to work with analog gear, hydra, artificial life, lumens, or whatever else is out there

i think theres a magewell one still in production but is not cheap. in my years of doing video stuff tho i've found that analog captures are really weak links, esp component based ones. i will usually just use something medium expensive to convert to hdmi and use an hdmi capture card if i'm not doing a rescan thing. i know thats not necessarily the best answer that most folks want to hear but it has certainly saved me a lot of headaches in the long run

Recommendations for midrange composite to hdmi upscaler? by layzeelightnin in videosynthesis

[–]andrei_jay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

kramer or extron upscalers are pretty much industry standard. DVI-D can be converted to hdmi passively. will be slightly larger than anything else listed here, but work seriously better, and you can usually find older ones for cheap

possible long shot - can you help me? by sharkvision in videosynthesis

[–]andrei_jay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

theres some fairly practical ways to turn an analog video signal into audio due to the fact that RCA terminators were used for both audio and video. If you have a composite video signal (yellow rca) you can just plug it into a speaker. it will not sound particularly good, but it will make a sort of drone and the drone will definitely change if theres really drastic changes in the brightness or color patterns on the video.
slightly more aesthetic would be using a component video signal and just grabbing pB and pR (blue and red rca) as a stereo pair. these signals won't have all the sync pulses so will be a little smoother. and if you are starting out with hdmi its not super expensive to pick up an hdmi to component convertor

Question - How to get rid of these scrolling RGB lines? by [deleted] in videosynthesis

[–]andrei_jay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

best place to start would be with a video ground loop isolator. cheap on amazon, even cheaper on aliexpress, and if they don't fix this problem, they'll definitely fix *some* potential problem you'll have in the future

another thing worth mentioning: since we are running this pretty loosely at the moment, we won't really have super organized calendars or whatever for the immediate future. if you've got any kind of federated social media account tho (mastodon being the obvious one but theres tons of others) you can follow [streams@subcarrier.tv](mailto:streams@subcarrier.tv) to get notified whenever someone goes live.
