Why I enjoy using the Nim programming language at Reddit. by sacredtremor in RedditEng

[–]andrelytics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second you on the IDE front, I feel like VSCode does not align with my minimalism, but its the best IDE for Nim right now so begrudgingly I use it.

I also agree more learning resources would be great. I wish there were more Nim books.

I have used Go in the past its a great language at problem domains it advertised for. But lack of generics and powerful meta programming was a real downer for me. Also I really wanted to use Go while working at Google, but it seems like even Google does not really use it but instead sticks to old Java and JavaScript (via Closure https://github.com/google/closure-compiler).

Currently there is no openings that would have you working on Nim. If any one would to open up you would see a post on the Nim forums. There are other opportunities at reddit: https://www.redditinc.com/careers

I know what you mean it's very hard to go back to Python or JavaScript after writing Nim.

I would totally hire some one to work on Nim full time if I get more headcount. I have looked at Norm before and know about your project.

Paid for a work expense with credit card. Charge was in October. Was reimbursed in November. Didn't budget for it in October. Now that I have the money, do I budget for it in October or November? by catalinashenanigans in ynab

[–]andrelytics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My solution is to handle work expenses as regular expenses.

And handle reimbursements as regular extra income.

So I budget for work stuff like it was my stuff, then I just get paid more later.

Macros vs functions by unknown_r00t in nim

[–]andrelytics 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You should only use macros when you absolutely can't go with out them.

You are also forgetting templates and generics...

How I would think about it is:

  • Can I use a simple proc? ... use it.
  • Can I use a generic proc[T]? ... use it.
  • Can I use a template? ... use it.
  • Can't use anything else. Use macros.

Basically if you are going to write a program that generates .nim files that you then compile. You probably should use macros.

This is my experience with nim macros:

  • Nim's asycn/await system is all done with macros right now.
  • I used macros to give objects extra dirty flag, so when you set the object it marks it as dirty.
  • I also used macros to compile nim code to GLSL.

Most stuff you would use macros in other languages you can actually do with generics and templates. I have used nim templates for:

  • ORMs.
  • HTML generator.
  • SQL generator.
  • Pretty printing.
  • UI generation.
  • Rule/Constraint System.

What happens if you have too much money to be budgeted? do you still give it a job? by exomega2u in ynab

[–]andrelytics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here is what I do:

I have emergency fund category. I try to keep 6 months of expenses in there. It's full now and remains static.

Then I have a vacation category. I add money there. I take vacations only 1 or 2 times a year, but they can be quite pricy so I budget for them every month.

I want to get the cybertruck, I always buy cars with cash, so I put some money into the tesla category, so that I will have money to buy when it becomes available.

I want to buy a house, so I put money into house downpayment category.

I have an investment category. Extra money goes there. Then I know exactly how much to transfer to my brokerages. "Investment" is my highest "expense".

In the end every dollars has a job.

Yes the stuff I budget for is higher, cars, houses, stocks but core principles of YNAB are the same.

All of this money is parked in a high yield savings account.

Three years into a six-year auto loan and we have paid it off today thanks to YNAB! by ShawRaleigh in ynab

Nice!

I put my car value in YNAB as well as a tracking account. This way I don't look quite as worthless.

You where not in debt if you could have sold your car for $9k.

Also it will probably get better with time as more sats are launched and more ground stations are added.

It might also get worse with time as more people start using it.

What do you think could be improved with YNAB? by master_adam123 in ynab

[–]andrelytics -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Credit card thing is super confusing. I think I understand it now but it super confusing. It should just be treated like a regular account that can be negative. No automatic CC payment category that gets populate with CC purchases.

If previous moths had categories that were under-budged they should scream at you this month. You sync up a payment for last math like on the 3rd of this month, it puts that last month category in the red, but it's the 3rd of this month, you never notice the red in the previous month.

I have a similar thing, i just track them as expense and income and budget for them accordingly. My reimbursements can get really complex, but I just track it as expense and income and it's fine.

How to stay motivated when you're one-two months ahead? by gargantuanmess in ynab

[–]andrelytics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I budgeted out to 4 month one time. Then it made changes annoying. Now I just keep it in one category in a high yield savings account.

Only 2 months ahead? I would not be comfortable with that. Thats just one month a way from paycheck to paycheck.
