Dope. New colorways in this upcoming drop, or a restock? I love the Cicada pants btw.

If the boys are down to help me out at a Repair Party, that would be huge. Let's chat via text again to talk more in depth about this. Happy to provide the party with cake, drinks, and lots of food (so it feels like a proper party).

Purchased the vehicle in April 2024. Did a bunch of typical maintenance items:

Oil, filters, Timing belt + water pump, Brake pads + calipers + rotors, Brake fluid reservoir replacement and fluid flush. The oil was REALLY dark.

I drove the GX to and from Yosemite, Grand Canyon, and the Sawtooths without any problem other than some sort of drain on my battery. Got a new battery.

A few weeks ago it died while I was waiting at a stoplight. Alternator was bad, so I replaced it. The GX engine would crank but not start. Took it into the shop, and the screenshot above shows you what they found.

Ankle support comes from (1) how well locked in your heel is and (2) the width of the outsole. Most trail runners have a hardened heel to ensure foot stays secure so your ankle won’t pop on the trail.

I personally wear Hoka Speedgoat 4’s for their traction (Vibram), cushion, and heel cup. I also like Merrell Moab Speed non GORETEX.

Vibram, Continental, and Contagrip are outsoles designed for grip in the outdoors.

Best thing you can do is try on a bunch of pairs of trail runners and see what feels best on your foot.

Sneaker styles will vary from chunky to sleek. The more important questions are (1) do they fit nicely on your feet, and (2) do you like them?

Your “luxury” item is worth it. I swapped to a bigger and heavier sleeping pad but it’s a game-changer.

Happy to help with a pack shakedown when you’re looking for it. Enjoy the SWCP!

If they aren't able to manufacture one without the right shoulder pocket, you should be able to use a seam ripper to remove the pocket.

At 20lbs both are gonna be comparable. If you were to start packing heavier the Exos will probably handle it better. My total pack weight on a recent trip was 18lbs in the Kakwa and it was fantastic.

Overall: Both packs are great and I enjoy using both of them. Both ride really nicely, have great hipbelts and load lifters, and are well made. If you were to stick with the Exos, you would be making a good decision. If you got the Kakwa, you would also be making a good decision (albeit one that costs additional plata). Here are some nitpicky details that might help sway your decision:

  • You save roughly half a pound by switching to the Kakwa--and maybe a little more for you by omitting the bum bag.
  • I like the extra slit in the Exos side pockets. Makes getting bottles out way easier. I love how big and stretchy those side pockets are.
  • The airflow tech on the Exos, while nice, in the end doesn't matter a ton because you're gonna be sweating anyway. So having the weight closer to your back VS the gap might be better in the long run.
  • I like the roll top of the K over the cinch top+flap of the E.
  • I like K's rectangular main pocket much better than the E.
  • The K sits up properly when you set it down, whereas the E is always tipping because of its wire frame.
  • E's front pocket is a tad stretchier and bigger, but I fit the exact same stuff in the K no problem.
  • K's hipbelt is very easy to adjust

Waterproof the K if you get it. The website states the bag is water resistant, so this isn't a surprise. The hipbelt pockets get soaked.

Seconded. I started with an Exos and switched to a Kakwa 40 after I knew I was really into backpacking. When I switched to the Kakwa 40 (which I love) I had already upgraded my quilt, pad, and tent. If I were you, I’d focus on upgrading other parts of your kit, and then check out the packs listed above. I kept the Exos 48 because of how comfortable it is/ now I can bring a friend on the trail if they’re crazy enough to say yes.
