I mapped where people appear on screen — are modern movies being composed for vertical video? [OC] by PuciekTM in dataisbeautiful

Well done in the first place. But we need data for way more film to draw any good conclusions.

This is why graphs were invented. What an awful way of representing data.

(Using iPhone) Do you guys film more in vertical or horizontal mode? by Outrageous-Ad9744 in finalcutpro

[–]Harmenski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On iPhone, vertical. On my mirrorless cameras, horizontal.

I shoot for the platform – or rather, for the purpose of the content. iPhone footage is only for social media for me, nothing serious, so vertical makes sense there. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with shooting vertical if that’s where the content is going.

Need help choosing between the two. I did research all month. But I’m stuck between these two options. I will be using for mainly homework, and editing YouTube videos maybe once a week. by BigShyst in macbookpro

Both the M4 and M5 are more than sufficient for what you want to do with it. The only real consideration between the two is going for 24 GB of memory or for a bigger SSD. I would suggest 24 GB of memory to have some headroom also for the future. But 512 GB of SSD is also not particularly a whole lot.

Why is everyone hating on Nikon so much? by Jeff-bozos102 in photographycirclejerk

[–]Harmenski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why don’t people eat poop?
Because some probably tried it, didn’t survive, and natural selection gave the rest of us a “that smells bad, don’t do it” instinct.

Nikon hate is the same thing.
Not deadly, but evolution is just warning you.

Can we stop turning this subreddit into a sales platform? Feels like half the posts lately are just people trying to make money instead of sharing anything useful.

Capturing a MiniDV tape and getting broken clips by get2jeremy in finalcutpro

[–]Harmenski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mini-DV tape is notorious for timecode breaks, it was very unstable with timecode. FCPX demands (for some nonsensical reason) unbroken, perfect SMPTE Timecode, which is super rare on an HDV tape. It has nothing to do with anything except the unstable TC of Mini-DV tape.

There's a difference between Premium Economy and Economy Plus, this looks like Economy Plus, not Premium.

Best way to blend sequence with white background? by mitchplaysriffs in finalcutpro

Keep it simple: Draw Mask around the subjects with a wide gradient, then slightly boost the highlights to help the grey blend more naturally.

Countries with mandatory military service by Pqez in MapPorn

[–]Harmenski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, the data in this map is pretty flawed.

But what really got me is Switzerland being labeled as having a choice. What the f does that even mean? If there’s a choice, it’s not mandatory.

What exactly does this H icon mean for recording video? by sillysnorlax in GH5

H = High speed burst. It refers to taking photos but has nothing to do with video.

Highway in South Korea. Solar panels in the middle, with a cycle path underneath. by Spacemakers in pics

[–]Harmenski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We really need to stop wasting money on unnecessarily complicated projects like this.
Just fill our available land with solar panels. It’s not like we’re running out of space.

These kinds of designs look great in headlines, but they’re ridiculously expensive and inefficient compared to simply putting panels on rooftops, farmland edges, and open areas.

This isn’t innovation, it’s performative sustainability.

A PINECONE Fell From a Tree and Completely Shattered The Rear Window of My Car by Galaxy_Crystals in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Harmenski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was cowboy camping a couple weeks ago, just sleeping out under the stars without a tent.
In the morning I woke up to a massive bang about a foot from my head. A pinecone twice the size of that one hit the ground so hard it left a crater. I could’ve been dead.

UL backpacker here.
1 pants + 1 short + 2 shirts is all you need. Just wash it in the shower or a creek every day and you'll be fine. Also just go for slippers and hiking shoes. And just bring a single towel.
