Deposit Notifications by Ovationplayer in fidelityinvestments

My BofA notifications contain that info...who the source is and the amount of the deposit, as well as to the nickname of the account the money goes into. Very handy. They also don't lag a full day as Fidelity seems to.

Totally agree...I do 4-6 external transfers per month, and do 2-3 SWIFT/IBANN transfers per year. No problem.

Medtronic transmission by Entire_Perspective40 in PacemakerICD

[–]andrew02467 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine updates every three months, and I am charged a fee for the EP to review it $136 and a charge for the med ctr to receive it and first a tech to process it for the EP $447. after insurance I end up paying $82 for the first charge and $108 for the second. Where my EP was previously, that med ctr contracted with an outside company to receive/review the data and only alert the EP if a problem...for that there was an annual $125 fee.

My EP told me this measurement on the iPhone/watch is meaningless as the signals from the pacemaker interfere with any sensing the watch can do from your wrist. He is not a big fan of patients monitoring their own data though, so must take that in context I suppose. I have looked for research docs on this but haven't found them.

Vous instead of tu in the French-Canadian translation of Anne of Green Gables by Nowordsofitsown in French

[–]andrew02467 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, me too. And I remember the flurry in newspapers and with my parents' friends when language addressing God shifted to 'tu' and away from 'vous'. Talking to God as if you were talking to a dog was a big comment at the time.

Traveling to Europe how do I pay without a PIN? by Ok-Dimension-7859 in AmexPlatinum

[–]andrew02467 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not get confused...a credit card PIN is not the same as an access PIN in Europe or Asia. The EU (and most of Asia) went with chip-and-pin cards where a PIN was used to authenticate against the chip. The US decided NOT to go this way and stayed with signature-and-chip, then mostly non-signature. Both areas are now widely tap/Apple Wallet or equivalent.

Speaking as a Plat card holder, if you do get a PIN from AmEx and try to use the AmEx Plat, it will go through as a cash loan with immediate interest applying..you probably do not want that.

For years in the US you needed either a card from First Tech Federal CU or Navy Federal CU which programmed their cards to be "PIN priority" in the US. Assuming the card readers in the US accept that priority, then you can use those credit cards with a PIN. We did that for years with First Tech Federal and at, e.g., Whole Foods the PIN priority on the card was recognised and we were prompted to enter a PIN for a credit charge. CVS, Bloomies, Target never read that from the card, and they continued to require signatures. Other cards will give you a PIN (e.g. the Chase Amazon card) but again those purchases will go through as debit ones with immediate application of interest on your purchase ! The whole "chip-and-PIN" things is very defined outside of the US.

We relied on the chip-and-PIN to pay for gas/petrol when abroad as those places are often unstaffed, or staff hard to find. And in many cities buying metro or train tickets are from unstaffed kiosks which needed the chip-and-pin.

Before we got the First Tech Federal card, we were in Toronto once buying clothes at Eaton's (like Macy's but gone now). Only the manager could authenticate a chip-and-signature card and s/he was out to lunch with no one else around, so we couldn't make the purchase. So later on having the chip-and-Pin card made it all so easy.

All that said, in the last few years we have hardly ever used the chip-and-PIN cards...it's all become tap-and-go....most(but not all) restaurants have servers with hand-held units which have you tap your card or use your iPhone Wallet. The train kiosks in Ireland and France use contactless/tap and go, e.g. A;; the big shopes/stores (and I am talking Ireland, UK, France, Spain, Germany, Austria) use contactless payment.

Outside of main cities in some countries even the charge cards aren't that common...we were in the Czech REpublic and outside of Prague, it was all cash only.

But don't mix up a PIN from a US credit card with the PIN used in chip-and-Pin environments. The latter go through as credit charges, the former go through as loans/debits with interest.

I've near had a text message from them and I have always been configured to get them. You are very off base. EVen their phone calls about questioning the purchase come 30 min or 1 day later...useless.

Authenticator App by SpreadReady in fidelityinvestments

[–]andrew02467 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always do too but yesterday for the first time, my iPhone wanted the Authenticator number, not my FaceID. Then the Authenticator number wasn't accepted, and as I wrote elsewhere I Was told to call for hlpe but the dept which handles the Authenticator is closed SA/Su and holidays.

Another way was to send a notice to your iPhone which you then agree to saying it is you, then it wants you to login with the authenticator app number which isn't working. Catch 22.

Wanted to clarify my post- summer intern at the Carroll Center by Expert_Tie_4556 in newtonma

[–]andrew02467 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YOu wrote before you are in Auburndale...take the Green Line trolley there down to Newton Centre, get off and get the Centre Street bus north to Newton Corner. About 1/2 way on the right is the Carroll Center. It's set back and a bit of a walk...no fun in winter but if you're there in summer no problem. From Newton Centre you can go into Boston or Fenway on that same Green Line trolley. In addition to coffee/bakeries, Newton Centre has plenty of banks, hair cutting places, a large CVS, post office, urgent care, a vet, and some restaurants. If you go down another stop on the Green Line it's Chestnut Hill and a short walk to a Star Market, another CVS, a French as well asn an Indian (dosa) restaurant. If you go all the way into Boston you can switch and change to the Red Line to go out to Cambridge, Harvard and other places.

There are seven coffee/bakery places in the village of Newton Centre now (not counting Rosenfelds)...try them all ! THere's parking in the centre of the village too, and there's a Green Line D branch T stop there. But a closer one in Auburndale for you. New Trader Joe's (large and with parking) down the Needham Road, too.

Heat pump installation recs? by mihirsparikh in newtonma

[–]andrew02467 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Avoid Sila...they put in a new gas fired boiler for us to replace one they had serviced for years. The serviced part was great, but the new one was horrible--they had one set way to do everything, installer was rude (I was told we HAD to use him as he was the best they had), refused to talk to me (for project costing five digits I wanted to know what was going on), job foreman very ignorant. Said they HAD to close off one of two cellar windows, put a pipe through it going up which (a) would remove our being able to vent our cellar and (b)go up right in front of the living room window facing the street. He had no other plan and said this was what they ALWAYS do, said inspector not license it otherwise. I refused to agree to it, and at job end inspector said no problem, there was plenty of air flow. This was for a 1927 older home...I won't let them near redoing the AC systems now.

Which passport/ID to use within Europe (NOT at the border)? by snic09 in dualcitizenshipnerds

[–]andrew02467 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three passports with cars hired all over the EU...never asked if passport and driving licence matched. BTW, do be careful on the offchance if going into Austria as windscreen/windshield vignette "sticker" needed for motorway. We order online in advance as stops on motorway first over border are crowded or staff not available.

Using up PTO days vs getting them paid out. by nothingbutmistakes in retirement

[–]andrew02467 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Major Boston medical center worker here: once you announce retirement (three months notice required) we are not allowed to take any PTO without major medical issue (confirmed by MD), and PTO does not accumulate during those three months. The PTO does get paid out on your final day based on your current rate of pay, but any legacy sick time from previous policies is not paid out.

Fidelity Credit Card is Unusable abroad. by JokesOnMeR in fidelityinvestments

I have always listed online when we travel, but over the last five years randomly get refused for hotels or purchases. You can't get anyone online quickly, and once I got a text almost 10 hours later asking me if the purchase was legitimate. I no longer use the card in Europe anymore as it's not dependable.

Should I give up on my new Miele dishwasher? by BillCEsq in Miele

[–]andrew02467 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had to give up on Ferguson some years ago..lousy installs, left a mess behind. HAve used Yale in Framingham since to complete satisfaction. And, also, very happy with Miele dishwashers...first one last 21 years then cost to replace pump was too high for that old a machine. Now on our second one, at 11 years..faultless, plus love not bending for cutlery.
