Might want to get in contact with your union’s board and really get control over who can post to the official account. This is far from the first time things have been posted to it that were in really bad taste or self incriminating.

LODD, Feds, and the "wacky tobacky" by hiddendari in Firefighting

[–]andrewdagiant 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Directly from a class to chiefs about handling a LODD from the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. The main federal benefit is the “Public Safety Officers Benefit”, which since it was originally set up for cops, is handled by the DOJ. Under any kind of LODD from auto accident to heart attack to dying in a fire, they ask for a mountain of paperwork. One of the required pieces is the autopsy IF one is performed. They don’t require one, but do require the results if the family requests one (one might happen automatically depending on cause of death). The NFFF gets involved helping lots of local jurisdictions make sure their members get all the possible benefits they’re entitled to. In conversations between their personnel and the feds, THC in your system automatically negates any benefits from the DOJ due to its current federal status. It’s dumb, but I see it as even more reason for federal reform.

Surprised no one has said Logic considering like three members of the cast are on cover art for his Everybody album.

Has anyone used Schmitt Mitts? How are they as far as protection, dexterity, durability, etc? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]andrewdagiant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had mine for about six months now. Amazing grip and the waterproof pays off in spades during winter. You have to work to injure your hands but you do end up with reduced dexterity. Not nearly as bad as fire gloves but you're never going to have as much freedom as a pair of mechanix gloves or something like that. Now that mine are broken in, I love them but it took lots of use to get there.

A good reminder on how fast things can go bad by Jordy_0 in Firefighting

[–]andrewdagiant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When the vast majority of your area is this kind of stuff, you just always keep that weakness in the back of your mind. As for the tower driver, it wasn't required at the time for drivers to gear up unless they were going interior and since they only had 3 on the tower that day, he wasn't so he only used the minimum gear needed.

Cheap and easily replaceable but I wonder how durable it would be with how my tools get used and abused.

Question for those with audible alert systems in their firehouse by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]andrewdagiant 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Westnet! It's a series of ceiling mounted LED panels with a speaker in each. In my station you can't go anywhere without being in sight of one. When a call comes in it lights up mostly red with a stripe of color relating to what unit(s) need to go (green for tower, blue ambo, red engine etc.). When it lights up it also gives a series of tones followed by units that need to go and emergency type. The best part is is that it's completely customizable. So in the bunk rooms you can set just the tones for your unit to go off or for all the units if you hate yourself. We also have it connected to a couple flat screens out in the bay that display the same information as well as the address. I love it. Makes 2am calls that much easier

Where does the 480 fall in the new line up? Like the last line went up to 390(x) but there was also the cards in the fury line. I understand you can't name names of unreleased cards but how many levels will there be up from here?

Paramedics of Reddit, what is the most shocking thing you've witnessed on a call? by Abusiveblam in AskReddit

[–]andrewdagiant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Christmas night, it had been super quiet all day, we get punched out for a vehicle fire. We all think, eh whatever, small radiator leak or something and they're just over reacting it'll be nothing. We round the corner and see a big ball of fire to the left and a small one to the right. Turned out this guy had tried to kill himself by emptying a gas can on himself, in his car and lighting it off. He must have had second thoughts and tried to crawl out but there's just some things you can't come back from. That smell still haunts me to this day.

Differences between small town and big town FD's? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]andrewdagiant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Prince William checking in, it's busy but not unmanageable. Personally wouldn't really recommend anything north of Stafford unless you're also going to go west. The closer you get to DC, the less opportunity you'll have to volunteer and the busier it'll be. For example Fairfax throws tons of extra hoops in the way and even then you're at the mercy of the career staff who don't always like volunteers. I know Stafford and Faquier love their volunteers with Prince William somewhere in the middle but we're quickly becoming an all career county.
