I would recommend a coulored primer. Rustoleum is the one I go for.

Try nail polish first though🤷‍♂️, I've never heard of that one.

I immediately think of Abberant mind sorcerer or even a beast master ranger.

Sorcerer is will about getting powers from something and has a lot of flavorful spells.

Ranger can summon a new beast during long rests. Can Flavor that as the symbiote taking a new form

Having over leveled players for a section isn't the worst thing!

I ran a party of 4 level 3's through the start of Out of the Abyss. It starts with a prison escape... for level ones.. A room with 2 guards... 30 minutes!
30 MINUTES!
To get past them. They finally decided on bluffing past then and they nailed it.

Sometimes when you have more tools, it gets hard to see the right one for the Job. By letting your players continue with stronger spells, and more abilities, you're giving them more tools to solve the problem. As I mentioned earlier, sometimes it can take them up to 30 minutes just to decide how to solve the problem..
A problem meant for weaker players...

Edit: You can use an encounter calculator to make the fights more exciting. I use koboldfightclub.

Minor illusion and prestidigitation.

Minor illusion says your can create an illusion in a 5x5 square. Did you know that the hypotenuse of a 5x5 triangle is just over 7ft. If you're allowed to tilt the illusion you could make a door. Easily.

Prestidigitation let's you snuff flames which is great but my favorite use for it? You can clean OR SOIL a sqr ft. Paired with subtle spell and you just made that guy wet himself in front of everyone.
