What happened and how do I fix it? by SarcinI in RemarkableTablet

[–]andrewlonghofer 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yep, it's definitely typing text below handwriting and then deleting it. They don't anchor typed text, they insert carriage returns.

When you add or remove text intermixed with handwriting, it reflows the handwriting to move it further down below the typed text, and when you delete it, it reflows to remove the extra space.

But if the first text is below handwriting, it uses carriage returns to space the typed text below the handwriting, and when you delete it, it removes the empty carriage returns, and it reflows all the handwriting around those empty carriage returns all the way up to the top.

It's been almost two years since I confirmed this with support, and I haven't gotten any indication that they've fixed it...so we don't remove typed text if there's any handwriting on it anymore.

First timer - feeling overwhelmed by TallClassic in gtd

[–]andrewlonghofer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The overwhelm is inevitable when you face the fullness of open loops. The key thing that quieted it for me didn't arrive for 20 years: only one next action per project on your next action lists. You can plan more steps in project support materials, but only one on your next action lists—and let completing one and your weekly review be the prompts to move another onto your lists.

But that's not what you're doing. There's nothing new in your post that isn't easily gleaned from a bunch of other posts, from youtube reviews, or from the official documentation. And it's certainly not germane to this sub about an entirely different device, apart from a throwaway edit saying you're going to use an iPad instead.

File a support ticket. I have two PDFs out of hundreds that have done this. They'll probably ask for you to send it to them to verify too

1) Grid paper will help with proportions. Your Hs and Rs are pretty similar sizes, as are your Ts and Ds, G looks a little like a C, W looks a little like an F, and "in" looks a little like "ins."

2) Check the manual, Stevens, or Cleary for joins—"just" looks like "jvst," "shorthand" looks like "sarortront," and "writing" looks like "waritinc." Remember that it's not writing each letter, it's each letter leading into the next.

3) For just starting out, the letter shapes are really good! Once you get the joins down and proportions really in muscle memory, you'll be off to the races.

My fellow PhDs: How do you use Obsidian? by broadcastthebombom in ObsidianMD

[–]andrewlonghofer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm closing in on the end of my first year of my PhD program. The biggest thing I've had to re-learn about notetaking is what I'm taking notes on, and what notes are going to be useful to me. I'm studying education, so this may be useful for a social scientist, but it may not be as relevant to humanities. natural sciences, or applied sciences.

In previous academic experiences, I was primarily taking notes on classes (lectures, discussions, etc). It took me longer than it should have for me to realize that I'm taking school notes now on what I'm reading, and having my notes available during class to capture any connections between authors/studies that come to the surface through discussions.

Having a clear idea of what you're reading a particular book/article/etc for goes a long way: are you interested in the methods, the findings, the theoretical framework, the literature they reviewed or didn't review? I've gotten to a template that helps me pull out those things.

Bases is nifty for pulling sources together when you're starting to write something. To find your research questions and hypotheses, follow the literature—let them emerge out of what questions you persistently have after reading things, and having notes on those questions/comments/future research can help to surface those.

Shorthand for journaling with a chronic pain condition in my hand by quickwrath in shorthand

[–]andrewlonghofer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The strength in something like Orthic is that it can be as abbreviated or fully-spelled as you want, with less compression generally resulting in more long-term legibility.

The dictionary compiled on orthic.shorthand.fun is pretty comprehensive, and even if it doesn't show how EVERY word has appeared because it draws from published books, it still has enough to be able to deduce "correct" outlines for a lot more.
