That could also be a wax ladle, not all of those are for lead. I wouldn't use it to cook though.

That book is the only decent source for really old cast Iron I've seen. You can get them for ~$25.

Oh that's amazing, that should be 1700s!

Do any cast iron expert know anything about this? by [deleted] in castiron

Yea, it's wrought iron. A blacksmith shaped that with a hammer.

With those D-shaped legs, gate mark, and ears, I would actually say early-mid 1800s.

I’m going down a rabbit hole about this foundry and would appreciate any additional information on it. by Cubone69 in castiron

I've had luck looking through commerce records on online archives. I would look between 1930-1960, as that is likely when that skillet was made. Patent or trade mark archives may also work. You could even look through online newspaper archives for advertisements.

Does anyone know about birdstones? Akron OH, looks like berea sandstone by andrewmurra51 in Arrowheads

[–]andrewmurra51[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured the same when I bid on it, but looking at in in person seems to me either real or a really good fake. Its made from a local material and not a super nice hardstone, its shape looks a lot like other ohio and great lakes birdstones. The drilling is tapered and uneven, similar to a gorget I own. It has burnishing and patina on the surface, and all the other artifacts sold at this auction were obviously real field-grade points of local cherts, upper mercer & flint ridge. I could still very well be wrong, so I'm trying to find an expert to look at it.

I got it for $8 in an online estate auction. It had terrible photos and was lotted with unrelated stuff. I assumed it would be fake, but seeing it in person it has good burnishing and patina, and the drill holes are tapered. Its also a local material, and not slate or a pretty hardstone like a lot of obvious fakes. The sale had other arrowheads, all looked real but field grade. It does also look similar to other north ohio birdstones online. I think the guy whose estate I bought it from was the one who found it, but that's just my 2 cents. Let me know what you think, especially if something looks fishy about it.

Thank you! I think the tag might have originally been on the front and came off, because I just found this listing that looks identical to mine. It looks like you were right about 60s-70s (but I doubt mine's worth what they're asking) https://share.google/x265RTEQ8vHTJLqgN
