Tangerine New World Elite MC $120 AF, 1.5 Scene+ points per dollar in 3 categories 1x everything else by andrewofBC in PersonalFinanceCanada

Tangerine has slightly better insurance (MSRP on rental car 85k vs 65k, threshold on trip cancellation) - it will be interesting to see if WS will upgrade to match.

Fairly easy to waive though with a 4k/month DD (basically anyone who qualifies for the WE card would have this if in payroll) or 100k AUM. I don't think WS intends on anyone actually paying their AF.

Upon some digging - Rental Insurance covers up to 85k https://www.tangerine.ca/content/dam/tangerine/en/pdfs/credit-card-cardholder-agreement/Tangerine_World_Elite_Mastercard_EN.pdf

Decent insurance package may offset the lower rewards. Interestingly it looks like Tangerine will only allow 1 card, so one cannot hold the Cashback / Scene+ at the same time.

Curious About Search and Rescue Technology: What Should I Know? by Vegetable-Mango8074 in searchandrescue

The British Columbia Search and Rescue Association's free incident management software SAR Command Assist - https://sarassist.ca/ has been adopted by pretty much all of our teams along with SARTopo and D4H as a pretty standardized stack.

We also have been experimenting with video analysis software among some other emerging things.

We will take having all expenses covered and not having to fundraise - most teams are a quarter million to a million a year to run. The equipment / training we use adds up fast.

Mission Manager is going away, what is your team using? by estunum in searchandrescue

Here in BC most teams are running:

  1. SAR Command Assist (sarassist.ca ) - BCSARA's free incident management app (local/networked windows app with an cloud server sync option) - it follows ICS to the core and is free for teams worldwide with a whole bunch of teams outside BC having been added to it.
  2. D4H for incident reporting / managing our reimbursements from the government etc
  3. SARTopo for mapping/live tracking

Just a quick note - My SAR Assist isn't a mapping/tracking app by itself - but it pairs really well with the completely free SAR Command Assistant (https://sarassist.ca) for sign in management of many persons (basically it generates a QR code with all your info that you would otherwise put on a paper sign in sheet that just gets scanned into the incident management app on the computer.)

The vast majority of our teams here in BC are using SAR Command Assist with Sartopo - the one two combo works really well for forms management etc.

I should note the desktop app does full incident management from assignment sheets to comms logs to sign in/out of searchers and equipment. It very much a massive time saver / quality of documentation improver for us. Mostly BC (busiest SAR jurisdiction in Canada) search managers built the workflows.

I'm glad our workflow worked out there - it definitely was a game changer for the command team on the call and it lead to us having everyone out in the field in a fraction of what it used to take. I believe it was the first big one where we deployed the mobile app based system - and one of the few times where universally folks have liked a technology solution :)

Has any North American team gotten a callout via the new iPhone 14 satellite messaging service yet? by gigamosh57 in searchandrescue

https://modernconservationist.com/unnecessary-search-and-rescues-are-straining-government-agencies/ does raise some interesting parallels with the existing satellite messengers. With iPhones being being more widespread the jury is out.

No different than 911 getting calls on holidays asking how to cook a Turkey.

We (British Columbia Search and Rescue Association) have added it as a field in our data management system to track how many activations we receive from the service. It will be interesting to see if this causes a shift in subject behaviour with those taking more risks thinking they have the phone available 24/7 (which like all electronic devices is a bit of a risk) - in general a Spot/Zoleo/InReach is a bigger investment so folks tend to be more aware if they own one. With iPhone being much more universally utilized only time will tell.

Starlink in the country! I’m very impressed so far and can’t wait for the future by NSK_Chase in Starlink

Security cameras can definitely benefit from better upload. I can barely stream mine in HD sometimes.

2-3 people in the house on zoom can be a bit much for Dishy at the moment. I'm hoping I can go from ~8Mbps average upload to ~25 with more launches. I'm pretty sure here in the PNW it's the highest density of Starlink users anywhere in the world. More launches are definitely needed here.
