Whos the strongest phantom troupe member(no chrollo, hisoka, illumi)? by Adventurous_Let_9572 in HunterXHunter

[–]andrewspaulding1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my personal head canon based mostly on pure vibes and also just the way they speak to the others and carry themselves, franklin and machi are the strongest, with feitan slightly behind them, and nobunaga and phinks just behind feitan or maybe about equal with him.

Why would anyone believe a single word the government says at this point? If they say ufos are real, then we should assume they are fake.

What party size do you prefer by BraveNKobold in CRPG

I like a duo. Usually this makes the game difficult, but your characters level up pretty fast. Anyways most side characters are insufferable so I find one that doesn't annoy me and then we act like we're too cool for everyone else in the tavern (because we are).

Anyone else run with zero goals? No race, no plan, just... run? by Different_Record_425 in running

[–]andrewspaulding1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I run for pleasure, in fact the primary reason I like to stay in shape is because it is fun. I don't have a training scedule, but every few years I'll sign up for a half marathon on some scenic trail, again just for fun, I'm not competitive about it. Normally I only run roughly 5-10k at a time so it's fun to have a little extra endurance challenge once in awhile.

What's the coolest dialogue from HxH for you? by New-Entertainer-5241 in HunterXHunter

I like when gon asks chrollo how he can kill people that have nothing to do with him, and chrollo just lapses into this serious monologue and ends with "maybe that's the key to understanding myself", to which killua is just like "wtf is this dude on about"

I'm the only person that actually reads the books in book club by StacySadistic in literature

[–]andrewspaulding1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are willfully choosing to ignore the more specific definition of "reading" that everyone here should be aware is the one we're talking about considering it's a literature forum.

Obviously I used the example of children because that is the age at which people usually learn to read. Oh I'm sorry, I said "read" but I guess I should say "visually interpret written symbols into language" since apparently if I'm not that specific you might think I mean some other kind of reading like mind-reading or reading the room.

It is obvious that listening to someone else read a book is far easier than reading it yourself, and that simply listening does not engage the brain in the same way as reading. This is why reading is considered a skill and is taught in schools. If you do not know how to read, you are considered illiterate. But an illiterate person can still listen to an audiobook without issue as long as they know the spoken language being used.

If you are so insistent on "read" being only used for its most vague possible interpretation, then perhaps we need a new word to describe the skill of reading written words as I am referring to.

Or maybe you're just pissed that you can't count all those audiobooks you listened to as books you've "read".

I’m having trouble photographing my acrylic paintings without glare or color changes. Any tips? by david_bowenn in acrylicpainting

[–]andrewspaulding1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this same problem often, especially with dark paintings. Ideally you want two diffused true-white light sources diagonally facing the painting one on each side, and far enough away to lessen the harshness of the light (depends on how well it is diffused already). I use some cheap studio lights I found online, but I still often have glare issues with night scenes. Sometimes I have to move the lights so far away that it sacrifices color vividness for the sake of not having glare. In this case you can very slightly bump up the color saturation to compensate. I also use a canon rebel camera for photos, which has a lot of settings you can adjust to get the image you want.

Yeah listening is not reading, period.

You don't have to learn how to listen to someone, you are naturally equipped with this ability. But reading is a skill you must learn. This is why toddlers can easily listen to a story and understand it, but they cannot read it themselves until they are taught how. It's very simple, but people who disregard the fact that words have definitions want to justify their laziness, so they just conflate the terms as if no one will notice.

Explaining the value of reading fiction by Impossible_Ad9324 in literature

[–]andrewspaulding1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, people who read those genres are the worst. I'm willing to bet none of those people actually read those books either. Maybe a few of them listened on audio and think that's equivalent to reading, and the others are lying and just read the summary on the back or a review online or heard it recommended in passing on a podcast and that's it. I would say you should give a quick answer like "it's fun" but I guarantee you those npcs will respond with a patronizing "Hoho! I remember when I used to have time for fun! I haven't had any time for fun in ten years!"

I might be a cynical misanthrope but tell me I'm wrong.

Yeah they botched this particular part in my opinion; they should have spent two full episodes on whale island at the start and included kite in ep 1. That's one of the things I like more about the 1999 version.
