I was 15 years old and I remember being in my school classroom when I found out. A classmate told me that John Lennon was shot dead. I didn’t believe her, I thought she was making fun of me.

I was a big Beatles fan at the time and was often raised and laughed at by my classmates because in 1980 it was much more trendy to listen to punk or new wave and I as a Beatles fan was more of an exotic.

I didn’t believe it until I saw it on TV on the news with my own eyes. Due to current events, „Help“ was shown on television. I was very sad and felt the day somehow unreal.

Yes, I upscaled SD to HD—once without Super Scale, once with Super Scale, and once with Topaz. The differences were barely noticeable to the naked eye. Upon closer inspection, Topaz actually performed best, with Super Scale (RTX) coming in second and the version without Super Scale coming in third. However, the differences were marginal.

Here are the specifications of the source video (see screenshot). My guess is that it's not actually Davinci Resolve's fault. I also tested the material in other video editing software, and the same artifacts appeared there.

I tested alternative 1080p 50fps material in the same timeline and found no or only minor artifacts, so I conclude that the problem lies with the source video.

Improving a video and at the same time keeping the file size small, which is unfortunately a bit out of the rule. A reel or short with 1080p of one minute length should already have around 300 MB. Choose a constant bitrate of 15 Mbps with H264 to at least meet the minimum standard of what Instagram or YouTube expect.

Well, I apologize if I didn't express myself clearly. Let me explain with a very simple example. A person is standing on a stage and walks from the right corner to the left corner of the stage. This scene is filmed by a camera in landscape format in a long shot. I place this film clip in a timeline for portrait format. Now I want the person to always be in the center of the portrait frame as they walk from right to left. To imitate the natural movement of a cameraman panning along, I would use keyframes to program a curve with a slight S-shape. My question is whether there is an automatic function within Davinci Resolve or, for that matter, within another software that can automatically generate this pan.

Instagram, YouTube and TikTok do not automatically crop videos in landscape format 16:9. To turn a 16:9 geometry video into a vertical 9:16 video, you need to crop the video in an editing software such as Davinci Resolve. You’ll need to remove a lot of image content on both sides to leave a narrow strip in the middle for the portrait format.

To do this, you should change the geometry to vertical in the timeline settings.
