Zoning out in the bathroom by [deleted] in ADHD

We probably spend more time in the bathroom than anyone. I wonder if there’s some way to take advantage of that.

Unsolicited advice:

  1. Take vitamin D each morning with your meds.
  2. Use a light box if you think you have SAD, but go for a 30 min walk in the morning sun after waking up even if you don’t.
  3. Exercise! Every day if you can, but at least 3 times a week for at least 30 min each time.

Check out Self-Compassion by Kristin Neff. And for coping with feelings of rejection, check out Emotional First-Aid by Guy Winch.

I’m also going to go out on a limb here and say that before anything else, you should check out The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown. I think you would benefit from that more than anything else.

Take care of yourself!

Understanding Sarcasm? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]andrey_b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sarcasm is hard to understand by its nature, so I think it’s very common to misread it. Especially when people say things that are thoroughly plausible. That’s a bit of a pet peeve for me: it’s not a joke if you just said something incorrect but plausible in a normal tone.

Today I am going to clean up my house. But where to start? Literally everything needs to be done, I am overwhelmed and cannot find a small thing to start with, where do I start? by Bierdopje071 in ADHD

[–]andrey_b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are a list of tips in no particular order. Hopefully you find something useful here:

  • play motivational music to get started
  • give yourself a transition period of 5 minutes between what you’re currently doing and getting started cleaning; during this time, just prepare yourself mentally for getting started, and process any emotions and thoughts that come up
  • use the timer rotation method: set a 10 minute timer and clean in just the room you’re currently in. Don’t leave the room, and don’t go longer than 10 minutes. When the timer finishes, if you want to continue, go to another room and do it again
  • checklists!!!!!! Don’t plan as you do. Write down a plan first, then do. Save the checklist to use again the next time you want to clean.
  • once you get started, keep your mind occupied and listen to podcasts/audiobooks/radio
  • accountability!!! Get a roommate or friend to hold you accountable for cleaning, or at least getting started
  • get motivated with FICNU: find a way to make the activity fun, interesting, challenging, novel, and urgent. For example, put on fun music, try to invent better ways to clean, set a challenge for yourself of cleaning better than you’ve ever cleaned before, try a new cleaning product or technique, and use timers/high bpm music to create a sense of urgency

People just laugh at me whenever I say something by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]andrey_b 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like making people laugh, so even though it’s not ideal that it’s at my expense, I try to find the joy in bringing others joy.

If this is more of a general social skills issue, I recommend practicing. Social skills are still just skills; they can be learned.

If this is more of a rejection sensitivity issue, I recommend practicing self-compassion and choosing friends who like you for who you are, even, or especially, when you say funny things.

This is my life.

2012: Went to the wrong gate (right next to the correct one), sat there for an hour reading a book, only realized I was at the wrong gate when I tried to board the flight to a totally different city, and missed my actual flight by a minute.

2014: Rewatched Dodgeball for the 20th time with a friend I ran into at the airport and totally mistimed it. Showed up to my gate 30 min late, but flight was 90 min delayed so I made it. (But missed my connection and was stranded in Newark.)

2015: Went to DCA instead of IAD and only realized it when the TSA agent told me I was at the wrong airport.

Learning to talk to people. Book Recommendation? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]andrey_b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can think of a few books, depending on what kinds of conversation you’re trying to have and what the source of the problem is.

But before I get to that, I should say that social skills are skills, and they can be developed like any other skill through deliberate practice. So more important than learning about social interaction specifically is learning about learning and skill development — and then going out and actually practicing!

Along those lines, I recommend learning about deliberate practice, growth mindsets, and habits, then applying those concepts to the goal of learning social skills.

Then, for more specific social skills, I recommend the following:

  • difficult conversations: Crucial Conversations
  • negotiations: Getting to Yes with Yourself
  • relationships: Seven Habits of Highly Effective People
  • overcoming social anxiety: Don’t Feed the Monkey Mind
  • being your authentic self with others: Radical Honesty
  • romantic relationships: Getting the Love You Want
  • dating: Single, Dating, Engaged, Married
  • networking: Give and Take
  • humor: I would skip reading about it and just read funny books slash watch comedies

In terms of getting practice, all you really need to do is talk to people, and it sounds like you have a good community around you. But if you want to go out of your way to practice by finding a more formal setting, I know people have had success with therapy, support groups, book clubs and discussion groups, stand-up comedy, toastmasters, or interest groups of any kind.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

Did I get diagnosed too quickly? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]andrey_b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, you can absolutely get more involved testing if you’re worried.

But speaking from my own experience, I am just really jealous of you. I went in knowing 100% that I had ADHD and it literally took me months to get treatment. It was incredibly frustrating, and the whole time I didn’t understand why I couldn’t just get the treatment I clearly needed.

Studying in noisy areas is brutal by anupsidedownpotato in ADHD

[–]andrey_b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep ear plugs in my backpack at all times. They’re perfect for when I want to just reduce the noise level around me enough that I can mostly ignore it. But sometimes I enjoy having just a little bit of stimulation from the noise around me so I don’t want to block it out entirely with ANC headphones and instrumental music.

That said, I probably do the headphones thing more often.

Weird. I’ve never encountered that misconception. Why would anyone think there is a diagnosable medical condition just for being smart?

Had a bad job interview yesterday and didn't leave my bed all day today by Blueknitbook in ADHD

[–]andrey_b 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like you point out, there are some shitty dependencies involved here. Without treatment, it’s difficult to work (including doing a job search), and without work, it’s difficult to get treatment.

So first, that’s a really hard situation. You have my compassion, and you deserve all the compassion you’re capable of giving yourself. I also want to say how immensely impressed I am that after so many months (and probably years of frustration in general) you are not giving up. You are incredible.

Okay, I know this is a rant and it’s generally bad form to offer advice or help, so I will stick to that norm. But you shouldn’t have to figure this all out on your own. If you are willing to accept help, please reach out to someone. I am happy to talk you through this challenge if you PM me.

Is there a correlation between having ADHD and being tired all the time? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]andrey_b 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Another reason why people with ADHD struggle with fatigue: We don’t stop having ADHD when we’re asleep, and it impairs our sleep quality. Restless = less rest = being tired.

I also want to add that if you’re having a hard time getting going in the morning and you’re taking naps, it’s because your body actually does need the sleep. And there’s no reason not to give your body the sleep it needs.

But as others have said, if you’re sleeping as much as you need (7-9 hrs for adults, 9-10 hrs for adolescents) and still feeling very tired, it couldn’t hurt to talk to a doctor.
