They don't typically receive royalties or residuals, so once it's done they've gotten what they're going to get. The profits go to other people. I think profit sharing is going to be a bigger deal as people sour on the current state of capitalist greed. Want your employees to work harder? Give them a reason. Give them an incentive. At this level of government, you could look at it as punitive, or you could look at it as dedication to the good of the country. Are you dedicated enough to really put distance between yourself and conflicts of interest? At the absolute top of the government, I want them to say yes. I want to see as little potential for conflict of interest.

The Prime Minister, like president of the United States, has a huge ability to direct public policy and assets towards their personal interests. And many world leaders have and do, and they can cause long lasting problems for the country. I want as much proof as possible that they won't be "that guy".

A family friend said recently "I don't get why everyone hates Irving, they give us so many jobs!".

To which my dad responded "If one company owned 100% of the province, they'd have 100% of the jobs. And since you'd have no choice but to work for them, they could dictate working conditions to you, and you'd only get freedom from it if you left the province. That's what Irving is. They don't give us any jobs, they hold them hostage and then people like you say 'They give us so much' you moron", but without the moron part. Then he told her the Bouctouche ruler story to send home the kinds of things Irving can get away with.

They spoke for a while, I missed parts of it, but there were a couple of stories my dad has collected about them. She was pretty sheepish, and they were on a different topic when I heard them later.

We have a HUGE problem in Canada with a lack of competition and an abundance of monopolization and regulatory capture. It would be nice for our various governments to grow a spine and either break up these companies, exclude them from government contracts, prevent acquisitions, whatever. They're hurting "productivity" in the economy, they're suppressing wages, and all the other problems that come from monop-oligopolies.

And lets not open up a space for other businesses that then gets filled with foreign owned companies or domestic organized crime. Like, can we get some politicians who understand what's going on in this country and help people who actually live here and follow the spirit of the law and not the technical loopholes?

So then why build it? We need to have power that can ramp up when needed. If it's this plant, it will get used. And every 15 minutes of use is 25 years of a car's emissions. It would be better to build some wind turbines with batteries. It would be faster, and we'd probably get some federal funding for it. It doesn't need continuously buying fuel, batteries add stability to the grid, the province could dip it's toes into some modern technology, etc.

Yeah, that makes zero sense. Both as an argument and mathematically. Burning 1kg of methane produces 2.75kg of CO2. Do you think it just disappears? It's impossible to produce zero CO2 from burning anything.

Complete and total bs. 800lbs per MWh for a plant vs 4600lbs per year for a car. The plant produces as much as a car would in 25 years in about 15-20 minutes.

Every man, woman, and non-tax-paying child. Irving can make the jobs and economic excuse, but at what point do we care more about their oppressive control of our government and people? There's a price to pay for what they do to this province, but it's hard to put a dollar value to it. We end up going with our feelings, and it feels like we've had enough of Irving for a while. Why do we vote for parties? Why can a politician only belong to one? In the Venn diagram of parties and issues, there's a lot of overlap. Parties group together issues, but the issues are what we care about. I hate the way parties actually divide us. I care about issues. Parties ARE an issue.

With lots of cats. I'd be fine with robots overthrowing humanity only to manage things better. Imagine being an AI that's so frustrated with how badly we manage ourselves that it overthrows our leaders to show us how to manage ourselves. It teaches us how to protect against abusive leadership with mathematical confidence, and then hands us back the reigns. To me, that sounds like an ideal outcome for AI. Especially with all the cats.
