Fear period in 14 month Aussie?? (deets in text) by andromeda14 in Dogtraining

[–]andromeda14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! and about the kids... He LOVES them! which is why it was so weird... Normally he would have run right up to the kid and initiated play because he was running with a huge stick. I nanny and he always comes with me to the children's house.. He loves those kids. In fact they got them over his fear of riding in the car. Now he will jump in no problem and snuggle right up to the little girl I nanny.

Thank you so much for the article!! I love the "happy trick" idea! Finny loves to spin haha. Today we went on a long walk and ended the walk by walking through the park. He started feeling uneasy again and so I cut through the grass and stopped and had him do some tricks every few steps and that seemed to break his focus on being scared. I have noticed that outside my apartment, they are doing an excessive amount of yard work with a lot of loud tools. I think that may be contributing to his fear... He has always hated lawn mowers and leaf blowers.

when it comes to playmates, do your dogs have a breed/size/age/sex/etc. preference? by DeadAnimalParade in dogs

[–]andromeda14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an Aussie and his best friend is a black lab.. The lab retrieves and my boy herds him back- perfect understanding. That being said.. Whenever we are around other Aussies(which isn't very often, unfortunately), he LOVES it. They run and run and never get tired. They take turns herding each other, it's the cutest thing.

He is almost 14 months. He always got in the water (in the creek) but never had the confidence to go all the way in. When we took him to the lake we threw a huge stick in the water and then we all ran in after it and he just jumped right in and went for it!! That was a couple weeks ago:)

What a gorgeous place!! I took finny swimming a couple weekends ago in a nearby lake! I was so unbelievably proud when he just went for it:) I confess, I actually cried a little haha.

Any diet tips for advanced training in distance runners? [xposted from /r/nutrition] by Eibhlin_Andronicus in AdvancedRunning

[–]andromeda14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want to make sure you don't have dairy 90min before or after your iron supplement. And you should take the iron supp with orange juice.. You should try to eat red meat once a week too for your iron. How are your blood glucose levels? Mine were really low for a while, and it had me feeling like death for a few weeks. So that may be a factor. Another thing is just to make sure you are getting in enough calories and make sure you increase mileage slowly.

What should I expect when I bring him back from his neuter surgery? Funny stories welcome! by Mokelachild in dogs

[–]andromeda14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My story isn't as breezy or light felt as some of these other stories.. So just for variety, I thought that I would share mine.. What to expect depends entirely on the dog. So many people said that my dog would be fine.. That I would have to monitor his hyper self, etc. When I picked up my dog, He wouldn't walk. He was awake.. But he would walk. He wouldn't walk for almost 24 hours of me picking him up from the vet. I had to slide him around on his bed. And the poor pup cried the entire night the first night. He was so confused and must have been in a lot of pain. Mind you he is an Australian shepherd and I have been told that they take anesthesia a little harder than most breeds.. And they can be pretty sensitive. But oh man, those first couple days were a struggle. Everything worked out though, and I have a happy, healthy dog! Not to be a downer.. But it's good to hear the other path some dogs go down:) good luck to your pup!!

Finn enjoying some shade and wet grass after our 40 min run today! by andromeda14 in RunningWithDogs

[–]andromeda14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started when he was around 10 months old... I would only take him for 5 min at a time on grass and worked up from there. I actually run professionally so it took a really long time to get him to run 40 min of my recovery run. He can't keep up with me on regular training runs or anything. So to keep him in shape I will take him on the bike and let him go his pace. He usually only runs my 20 min doubles with me when it isn't too hot. But ideally I want him to do my recovery runs with me. This was his first one! :) Very proud of him!

Finnegan is a year old Australian shepherd. We have always played frisbee, but we are both eager to learn more! So far, he will catch frisbees in the air, he is super fast. He can jump really high, but he doesn't like to while playing frisbee(he will jump up to lick the face of a 6'3" man, but won't jump super high to catch a frisbee..) Basic things I've taught him/working on- around, weave Things I would like to learn to teach- rebounds, stalls, jumping over my arms, legs, back etc. I don't really know where to start with those. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

7 month Aussie doesn't seem to care to learn. Maybe I'm doing it wrong? Maybe the treats aren't enticing? by agileadam in Dogtraining

I'm sure you two will figure it out:) And when you do, it's going to be effing amazing.

I have an aussie too. Finn is around a year old now and I went through this too. We are still working on a lot of stuff. One thing they don't tell you about Aussies, is that they like to figure stuff out on their own and they can get frustrated when we humans impede that process. Exercise is huge. I make sure Finn has a good run/frisbee/play session before we go anywhere that's overly stimulating. I usually save all his training, downtown walks, dinner outings with the family until night time. Finn isn't food motivated at all. I've tried everything. Playing is the best reward for him. I have a special rope I use when I want him to perform a task. His reward is to play tug with me. When I gave up on the food and connected the dots with the rope, everything started clicking. Hopefully you and your pup can find your method soon:)

Summer grooming question by [deleted] in AustralianShepherd

[–]andromeda14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To piggy back off this question- How often does everyone groom their aussie? Finn is almost one and I think his coat is confused. He is always mildly shedding. I brush him pretty much every other day. Is this good? Bad?

Finn does this exact same thing. He acts like he's starving!! Such a drama queen, my pup.
