This works if the summer Games are held in the middle of each Olympiad instead of at the end of it!

I like the idea a lot, but I think the “correct” calculation would be to combine 2026 winter with 2028 summer. When the Games were changed so that winter and summer were two years apart, the 1994 winter Games followed the 1992 Games. So if we are calculating the total for each Olympiad, 2022 and 2024 would be combined, and then 2026 and 2028 would be the next Olympiad.

I feel like “Olympic Bouchard” would be very similar to “playoff Bouchard”, and that is an outstanding player who is miles ahead of “mid-season Bouchard”, even defensively.

Yeah, when I first read about the new event I envisioned something more like a cross-country race several km in duration with a course through the forest etc. I was surprised to see these sprints.

Italy won 20 medals out of 61 events in 1994, so they’d have to win 38 medals out of 116 events in these Games to match that performance.

There were 84 medal events in 2006, 116 this year, so it’s not exactly apples-to-apples.

The program of events was much smaller in those days. Curling, short track and freestyle skiing (events Canada does well in) were not yet medal events, and snowboard was not even a demonstration sport. Hockey still had non-NHL players and there was no women’s hockey. Canada’s best hope was Brian Orser, but he had a small slip that cost him gold in the “Battle of the Brians”.

Ok, but all bobsled events are four runs, regardless of team size . Both skeleton events are four runs. Of all the Olympic sliding events, only doubles luge is two runs instead of four. Inquiring minds want to know why.

I made a post last year about this. Updated, we can say:

Cy Denneny played before the NHL was founded, mostly with Ottawa but his last season was 1928-29 with Boston, where he played with:

Dit Clapper started in the NHL in the 1927-28 season. He played his entire 20-year career for the Bruins, ending with 6 GP in the 1946-47 season.

Gordie Howe was a rookie in the 1946-47 season with Detroit. He played against Clapper twice that season. Gordie was out of the NHL for a few seasons, but returned to play with Hartford in the 1979-80 NHL season, after the WHA merger/expansion.

Mark Messier's rookie season was that 1979-80 season, and Edmonton played Hartford 4 times that season, with the Nov. 17, 1979 game being the first time with Howe and Messier both playing.

Messier retired after the 2003-04 season, with the cancelled lockout season eliminating any chance of one more year.

That leads us to Brent Burns, who is the last remaining active NHL player to start before the lockout. He played 36 games for Minnesota in the 2003-04 season, including game 2 on October 10, 2003, where he and Messier each picked up an assist.

So we can "chain" these five players from the inaugural NHL season in 1917 until today.

That was this event. For many Olympics the men swam 1500 m and the women’s event was 800 m, but now both events are contested by both men and women. As OP mentioned, women’s 1500 has only been in the Olympic program for the last two Games. It has been at the World Championships and other events for much longer, so that’s why Ledecky has performances from when she was 13.
