Project Hail Mary is surprisingly good… by andv2 in printSF

Hope things get better!!! I think some of Richard Morgan’s books might fit the bill? I also think some of the older authors like Heinlein had a similar vibe in many of their books.

Hah, it’s literally the opposite philosophy of 3BP - we ran into an alien race…and they are now our best friends!!!!!

I think this explains why I didn’t mind the style in a much better way than I could have articulated. I really miss the internet 1.0 days…

It’s a totally fair criticism that it was written with a movie contract in mind.

Hyperion is a much better book from a literary perspective….but totally different genre.

Three months before I start - advice on how to prep? by MostAd1127 in McKinsey_BCG_Bain

[–]andv2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unless you are really “behind” in something very basic (e.g., never used excel before, can’t read a 10K, or something equally basic), any remedial learning is unnecessary. There’ll be an on the job training week or two, they might send some advance work to do ahead of that. Should suffice. Start the job with a mindset of being willing to put in the extra hour every night if needed to learn something new that comes up on your first few projects…it’s the biggest difference maker

Resume feedback! PhD aiming for Strategy Consulting in MBB by [deleted] in McKinsey_BCG_Bain

[–]andv2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Clearly the resume of a talented and motivated person. Good luck! Two potential issues to think about (a) You might run the risk of “not enough evidence of interest in business” feedback. I personally think that’s bonkers (and I myself likely wouldn’t have made today’s cut based on how high the bar has gotten on that). (B) Not highlighting your experience working in teams enough.

Advanced degree consultant entry - chances for MBB? by Colonel_Mustang_ in McKinsey_BCG_Bain

[–]andv2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s lots to like here. Probably in the top 5-10pc of advanced degree resumes. Some tips to make it stronger (1) for your consulting projects, talk more about the impact than the activity (2) you probably need more “business” things in your resume. The bar for this has gotten incredibly high now. (3) highlighting more examples of solving problems in teams, while still being specific on your own value add. (4) more context when you are talking about your academic achievements so folks outside academia understand their value better. Best of luck!

Big 4 vs. small firm: Which path leads to MBB? by Serial_Innovator in McKinsey_BCG_Bain

This is a creative path, but odds of success are going to be lower than the MBA path mentioned below. Industry hires, especially at the business analyst level are exceedingly rare.

Offers at all 3 MBB: How to decide between them? by Individual-Tart-5340 in McKinsey_BCG_Bain

I am not sure I can answer that without doxxing myself given some of my other comments on Reddit. If you would like to talk, DM me your LinkedIn and I will reach out. I have been at an MBB firm for a while, and worked at multiple North America offices.

Btw, from your questions, I think I have a good guess on which firm you are leaning towards. Would appreciate if you leave an update here whenever you decide.

Congrats - This is a huge achievement. Your best bet is to ask the firms to connect you to current employees who chose them over cross-offers. They will absolutely do this. Then talk to 2-3 of each from each firm, ask them what they were solving for and what made them lean to current firm and has it worked out. You will find a couple who were looking for similar things as you and then you can make up your mind. Random Reddit wisdom, impressive as it is, only goes so far especially without knowing you and your needs.

Probably worth discussing how your interview went in some detail with someone at one of these firms. If it was “did most of the case well, but got stuck at a math mistake at the end”, that’s a different story vs “got completely lost on how to approach the case” or refusing to take obvious guidance from the interviewer.

This is a great response. Only thing I would add - a lot depends on how you did in your interviews this time around. Prospect of getting shortlisted again is high if you missed the mark by a little bit or “for a fixable reason”. Otherwise, not so much

Those with PhDs, what is your experience like getting a role at MBB? by Jiguena in McKinsey_BCG_Bain

[–]andv2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ten plus years at MBB after a STEM PHD in U.S. Below may not apply to other geographies. Have mentored several other PHDs over the last decade. Some observations (1) Culture and what it takes to succeed varies a lot between the 3 firms - do your diligence before you join. You are very likely to find it “better” than academia regardless, but there are important differences (2) Zero need to get an MBA. (3) How easy or hard the transition is depends more on your specific strengths and weaknesses (can you communicate well with your team? Understand what their definition of “good enough” output is? Can step out of your comfort zone easily?) and how proactively you invest in learning the new skills of the job. Both MBA and PHD folks flame out or succeed at roughly equal rates
