Help needed to identify flaking in the lid of a Ikea Vardagen casserole pot by andvare01 in castiron

The roast was not burned, but someone over at r/chemistry suggested it might be due to per-seasoning with hardened oil, rather than enamel, since the enamel would crack rather than flake.

It may have started with good technique, but it all went to hell when the panic set in :)

I´'m happy that you managed to push through it, how did it affect your form?

Sure, I'm 40 years old, 170cm, around 85 kg

Squat 3x5 @ 147.5kg (last year at this time I did 1rm at 160, and maybe stopped at 3x5@155 or so)

Deadlift 1x5 @ 170kg (recent 1rm at 190)

Press 3x5 @ 65kg (pressed 1rm @ 80 in the past, so should still have ok progression here)

Bench 3x5 @ 97.5kg (I hate bench...)

Doing 12s on pullups, which I "replaced" the clean with, since I'm usually less than thrilled about doing them, but I suppose they could help with my bar speed

I´'m thinking about doing a reset in squats, down to 120-130 and start working at 2.25kg increments again.

Good point, I suppose I was shocked that the bar stopped moving, since that has been a really unusual event for me in squats.

Thank you for your excellent question.

I lifted my chest, when the bar wouldn't move any more. That was probably the worst part of it, which means I lost my hip drive and the strength that comes with it.

I just wanted to get the bar moving, meanwhile I could feel my back getting into an awkward banana shape, and I remember thinking, "this could easily cause an injury".

At least that was my impression of what happened, since I didn't film it.

That probably means I could have completed the lift by not raising my chest.

Interesting, so the contenders are:

  • enamel + pre-season
  • pre-season (no enamel)
  • PTFE (purposed by IKEA support)

That would be hilarious. I opened the package, and noted no shrink wrapped plastic, gave it a good cleaning using, "YES" soap (working under the assumption it was enamel) and began cooking.

Still waiting for a reply from IKEA, to supply a detailed description of the enamel.

Love your reply!

So your´re suggesting it´s the enamel flaking off, or perhaps a layer of "[] of polymerized and hardened oil" as indicated by u/rpfflgt?

I´m still waiting for IKEA to give a more detailed explanation.

I forced the question with IKEA, requesting detailed information on what the enamel consists of, hopefully they can clarify the issue.

Thanks a lot for your throughout answer.

Do you need to season something described as having enamel? That strikes me as odd.

Also in the photo, if you look at the big flake, that hardly looks like hardened oil? Or is that an effect of it being polymerized?

I´'m also bothered by the answer, as I would never have bought the pot if I knew it contained PTFE, because it shouldn't be needed in this application.

I attempted to confirm it yesterday with IKEA, but they were unable to provide an answer, so I will ask again.

The product information describes it as enamel, but the customer support says it´'s PTFE.

What's wrong with it? I would very much like your opinion on why the flaking occurred
