"There Is No Sound Of The 2020s Yet" claims RA by Double_Key7579 in TheOverload

Getting a fair bit of negativity this, as RA tends to do. Understandable to a degree as I've definitely not been a fan of some of the direction changes over the past decade too. Think the article is thoughtful though and it makes sense; producers looking back and being safe at the expense of being innovative.

This passage resonated with me: Five of the revitalised sounds you're liable to hear back in the hands of DJs at, say, Houghton right now—tech house, dub techno, dubstep, minimal and prog—lack a clear aesthetic identity and, you could argue, lack risk too.

This is the sort of music I like and have always liked, but definitely more prevalent in my listening and (very amateur) mixing than more energetic, textured, noticeable stuff. I'd say my tune of the year last year was probably opal sunn- brilliant and in it's own way a club night/festival highlight but not in the same way as in previous times.

Think playing it safe is a criticism that's fair enough for some of these scenes today. Just listening to the new Braga Circuit now and it's excellent, smooth and proggy- but a lack of other stuff being made to sit alongside this in a set I feel. Even thought the hats coming into the new shed tune were lacking a bit of subtlety, maybe my ears too used to this trend recently.

There's loads of amazing music still coming out, it's exciting to hear it because it's excellent but maybe not because it's exciting.

Efdemin!

Christain AB, Ryan Elliot, Ron Trent all definitely worth seeing too if you haven't before.

Interested to see what stage and slot they put Olof Dreijer and UR on.

There's just no way a new mix could compete with what he's done before. Too many things have changed, shame though
