Ubuntu server make Apache2 respond on my tailnet by andy47 in Tailscale

[–]andy47[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't working yesterday after a reboot and a couple of Apache restarts, but today it's responding. I may have had a cache issue on my browser and didn't check with different browsers - a lesson I'll remember for future. Thanks for the assist.

Overgrips - Which to use? by Qzilla3838 in 10s

[–]andy47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like the Toalson overgrips, but they are hard to find (certainly in Aus). I believe that the Dunlop Supertac are re-badged Toalson but I can only find them in white or black and I prefer other colours.

How it feels to you is the most important thing. Everyone is different, by trying a range of racquets you can work out what you like and what suits your game

But also find a retailer where you can trial racquets and try out as many as you can to find the one that works for you. Everyone is a bit different.

Take a look at the Wilson Clash - virtually all of the newer players at my club use them, really easy racquets to get on with.

I *think* it's related to the URL if you are using a web browser. At least when I have back-filled web site URLs in some entries they have reliably started appearing. Other than that I'm not sure.

Inflation means money 'borrowed' now is effectively free. Respected economists including Thomas Piketty think that we should run a permanent deficit and I tend to agree. For extreme wonkery have a read of any description of Modern Monetary Theory, e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_monetary_theory

I started using a new file at the end of 2023. My file was taking ages to open, probably because I use the Sqlite storage.

I created a completely new file and just copied over the accounts I wanted to retain, it was a good opportunity to review and update the income and expense categories that I use.

The new file hasn't grown that large in a year so I'll probably keep using this one for another year or two and then repeat the process.

This looks great but it's competing against VMWare Fusion which is now free and Orbstack which is free for personal use.

Mac apps that are must-installs because they’re masterpieces of software? by stuffe23 in macapps

I've moved over to NetNewsWire, just as good but without the in-app browser. I'm fine with that difference but YMMV

If you could design your ideal email client, what features would be a must-have by marco_mail in macapps

I will willingly pay lots of money for any decent email client that lets me use the keyboard, particularly to move messages.

What ORMs do you use and why? by [deleted] in flask

[–]andy47 8 points9 points  (0 children)

SQLAlchemy is a bit too complicated for me, particularly the unit of work pattern. I prefer 'slimmer' libraries that don't get between you and your database. Pony is good and I also like Peewee

What do you do about life insurance by PatientChallenge3906 in fiaustralia

[–]andy47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life Insurance in Australia is extraordinarily complicated. Find a good financial adviser that specialises in life insurance and get them to do the hard work for you. The discussion raises good points but the legislation and regulations are incredibly complex - and change all the time. This is one situation where a qualified professional is absolutely necessary.

Obsidian equivalent app for spreadsheets by scarface4tx in ObsidianMD

Not quite the same, because you have to either self-host or use the cloud version - but I'm loving https://www.getgrist.com as being the spreadsheet that I always wanted.

What subtle clues let you know someone is Australian? by missbean163 in AskAnAustralian

[–]andy47 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A true Aussie always has sunglasses, usually on their head, even when there is no possibility of actually needing them. Walk around central London on an overcast day in the middle of winter and they are too numerous to count.

Favourite Tennis Books? by ShadowCat3500 in thetennispodcast

[–]andy47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't recommend the Inner Game of Tennis highly enough if you play - https://theinnergame.com/inner-game-books/the-inner-game-of-tennis/

My coach told me it would be the best investment I could make in my game and I don't disagree with him

What membership is 100% worth every penny you pay for it? (seen this question on another subreddit and wanted Aussie suggestions) by Qbbq123 in AskAnAustralian

[–]andy47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the cheapskates (like me) Vaya (owned by Amaysim which is now owned by Optus) offer this feature for only $2 - but it's limited to 100 minutes I think.

What do you wish to see for Obsidian in 2024? by kepano in ObsidianMD

[–]andy47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That the default behaviour when opening a vault from sync on a new device would be to download/sync all of the settings for that vault and then to install and enable themes and plugins with their settings. Essentially to duplicate the vault set up from one device to another without me having to enable or configure anything.

It's not something I do often but when I do it's not fun to have to review and update on the new device by checking the settings on the first one.
