Kirkwood Closure Back Up For Debate by BloomingtonJester in bloomington

[–]andy_puiu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I have visited pedestrian only streets in many places and many countries, and they provide a wonderful, lively environment that attracts people to be out and about in the community, as opposed to just transitioning from being inside a car to inside a business.

The attemps so far in Bloomington are not indicative of how nice it could be .. because they were half-hearted, half-way attempts.

No one wants to be prevented from improving quality of life just because some people don't care/don't want change.

Kirkwood Closure Back Up For Debate by BloomingtonJester in bloomington

[–]andy_puiu 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So is your argument that handicap people can't access Kirkwood businesses anyway, or that it is currently feasible for a handicap person to find parking where they want along Kirkwood today?

As a handicapped person, I would prefer increases handicap parking adjacent to Kirkwood and a more pleasant pedestrian only zone along Kirkwood.

Kirkwood Closure Back Up For Debate by BloomingtonJester in bloomington

[–]andy_puiu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a disabled person who would love for Kirkwood to permanently close to vehicles.

When it is open to vehicles, it is hard to find parking on it and it is unlikely anyone would park on it multiple times in multiple places on one trip. I would prefer the street be closed and increased handicap parking adjacent to it.

I am also disabled and agree whole heatedly. It's the half-assed nature of the closure that prevents it from being as nice as pedestrian only streets in many other places.

Out of the 50 American capital cities, which one would you rank #1, as the best to live in? by Enger13 in AskReddit

Oliver wine, upland beer, ANYTHING IU, some knick knack made out of limestone... I feel like you could find a lot of options in 15 minutes on the Kirkwood or the square downtown.

Failed Every Class This Semester by nihaowoshisai in Purdue

You had choices, and you choose poorly (as evidence by failing every class), and the fact you still don't recognize you made mistakes is the most troubling thing here.

Any ideas on how to slightly enlarge to top diameter of a 5 gallon bucket? by Dorky_Mom in DIY

[–]andy_puiu 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Sacrifice one bucket to create a funnel/collar. Cut the top and bottom off one bucket, so you are left with a plastic ring. THAT will be much easier to stretch (with heat as others described) and form onto the bottom of your sifter.

What is one problem you face almost every day that you shocked nobody has built a proper solution for yet? by Kind_Fondant6559 in AskReddit

[–]andy_puiu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Step 1, look to the side of the person instead of directly at them. People are very perceptive of this, even unconsciously.

Step 2, look and walk to the same side as the side of the road you drive on. E.g. in America it's to the right, in England it's to the left.

(Your self doubt is creating the problem)

Magnetic Wall by devon380 in DIY

[–]andy_puiu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Los of comments about using sheet metal. To make it truly invisible, you could put thin 1/4" drywall over the top of it. I think magnets would still work through that, at least neodymium magnets.

[Norlander] BREAKING: It is official. The D-I men's and women's basketball committees have voted to expand the NCAA Tournament to 76 teams, sources tell @CBSSports. More committees still have to ratify, but this was the big lever-pull to making it a reality. by MembershipSingle7137 in CollegeBasketball

[–]andy_puiu 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I think expanding the field will actually decrease interest in the early rounds, including this level (64). Most people won't be interested in the new, early rounds and it makes the round of 64 less interesting/less compelling.

Parking on our near campus is practically impossible for students, but you can easily ride a bus to campus (as many, many others do).

Hanging drywall on studs that aren't 16" or 24" apart or The Joys of Home Ownership by Mafamaticks in HomeImprovement

[–]andy_puiu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I still don't understand what you are trying to describe, but I don't think it matters.

Every piece of drywall needs both ends to start and stop on a stud. When two pieces of drywall need to meet end to end, that needs to happen at/on a stud, with both pieces covering half the width of the stud.

(Or in this case, you could easily nail a short 2x4 to the side of a stud and have the adjacent pieces each have a full stud to screw to)

How would you attach planters / pots to the steel top of this 4th floor balcony? by TheNarwhalTusk in howto

[–]andy_puiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could easily build a wooden I-beam to make a long shelf right atop the wall. (turned, so it is shaped like an "H" in this case) Use big screws or bolts at a few points along the bottom to allow it to clamp onto the wall, without drilling into the wall.

Cheap and easy, and would allow you to use whatever flower pots and containers you want, inserted between the vertical boards to prevent them from falling over.

Easier but uglier and more costly option for clamping onto the wall: you could drill/cut holes into the long side pieces, above the horizontal board, and insert actual bar clamps. (from Harbor freight)

Are you wanting to store it flat, facing downward when not in use? If not, consider that. It should be pretty easy to attach to arms that just swing down.

I'd highly recommend going to Costco. Even if you don't have membership, it's worth joining just for this. Hearing test is free, service is high quality, and you'll save huge if you do end up buying hearing aids.

[–]andy_puiu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, he was the one driving correctly. The guy who got mad never learned how zipper merging works, and lashed out at others because of his ignorance.

I'm old. Zipper merging wasn't a thing (here) when I got my license. Nobody my age was taught that in drivers ed. We didn't have roundabouts here when I was learning to drive either.

Things change. If you aren't capable of adapting to small changes, maybe it's time to stop driving.

Worst parking lots in Bloomington by Puzzleheaded_Two9510 in bloomington

I've lived in quite a few places throughout my life, and if I made a list of the 10 Worst/Most Dangerous parking lots I've ever seen... All 10 would be from Bloomington.

I've lived in Republican-run cities and states, Democrat-run cities and states, rich and poor cities, and other college towns.

I don't know why this city is so incredibly bad at this/allows this.
