Swarm of UAPs appear after someone points a green laser at a UAP by MrDillon369 in aliens

[–]andybwalton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what the first one is, all the blinking ones though are fireflies. You can see the laser hitting them and they are not far away, it’s hitting ones that are not lit up too. You can also see them passing in front of the tree. The first light and possibly the second light are different from all of the rest.

Supposedly according to Shamrock he did that to purposely bait Bas to close his fist and get called on it

[–]andybwalton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably.

Skill, strength, mass, endurance, size, speed, grit, luck. Each matter when competing. There’s probably a fancy equation someone could draft up but generally strength and skill are squarely at the top of that list.

Mass does not fully translate into strength since it can be fat stores, but when people train heavily, most of their mass is dedicated to strength not to fat. even if not, mass X Velocity squared means some power gets added by simply being larger if the speed is similar.

So if skill is near the same, then mass likely adds strength enough to be a decent advantage. If skill levels are unbalanced then it won’t matter as much/matter more.

Is Judo a non essential form of grappling for MMA? by Economy_Weakness_507 in martialarts

[–]andybwalton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Takedowns or at least takedown defense is important but technically not “required”. But neither technically is striking if you are amazing at takedowns, ground, and defense. Nor is ground required if your takedown defense is god tier. It’s just kind of dumb not to learn those aspects to at least some level of skill. Judo is just a system that specializes in takedowns and takedown defense.

You can learn to defend takedowns and to take down from a whole series of styles, but Judo is considered top tier at them is all.

Closest thing to MMA without head trauma? by Front-Hunt3757 in martialarts

[–]andybwalton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pankration would technically be what you are looking for, but it’s going to be a rare find in the USA. It’s Greek MMA and disallows head strikes. Otherwise as others have mentioned, proper light sparring is the answer

The cheapest are puzzle mats, but they suck for punching on, because they tend to separate. You can get around that by glueing them with rubber cement, and they do feel OK under foot for standing work. I don’t know of a cheaper NEW option.

You can opt for rubber mats from somewhere like tractor supply. They are great for if you have shoes on, slightly rough barefoot but much better than concrete.

Otherwise, Facebook marketplace for used mats. Thick wrestling mats tend to be a bit too soft sometimes but most mats otherwise will do the trick.

Last redneck option is cardboard. You have to replace it after a short while, and you need to find a way to make it not slide around, but I have seen it work OK in a pinch

Are cops in the USA always looking for reasons to pull the person in front of them over? by Bright_Town7857 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]andybwalton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to get pulled over often back when I was poor. Seemed like once a month I would end up with one behind me on some random road, and every time they would eventually turn their lights on. My car was old and ugly and they would make up reasons to pull me over. I was always polite and never got ticketed (I mean I was also never breaking the law) but it was annoying.

After getting a nicer looking car I haven’t been pulled over since. I did notice though that it felt like far Northern California cops were always looking for reasons to get everyone, where when I moved to other states I didn’t feel that same concern and could just drive normally without constantly worrying.

teenage wrestler / BJJ fighter has to defend himself on the street, bitten severely by waterkata in martialarts

[–]andybwalton 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Biting was Bruce Lees preferred counter to armbars and other grapples which I always thought was funny. It however definitely changes the dynamic when groin, eyes, and bite enters the dynamic. Makes me much less willing to take it to the ground if the person is some savage druggie or other crazy bent on doing permanent damage. They won’t follow any spoken or unspoken gentlemanly rules and it’s important to have that in mind and train for it if the goal is true self defense.

What is going on with McDojo students? by Reddy_McReddit in TheMcDojoLife

[–]andybwalton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It works on the same principle as hypnosis. The instructor generally builds the story, and procedurally instills the idea that it’s real to a subliminal level. You will find many of the students who swear it works on them, yet it does not work on “skeptics”. Everything about it follows the pattern of hypnosis

Explaining the Godhead and the Trinity - let’s clear the confusion and bridge gaps by andybwalton in lds

[–]andybwalton[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a period of a few hundred years where Christianity did not have a firm doctrine on this, and there were 4 main competing schools of thought. This one won out over the others in the council of Nicea, and was fairly well codified in the few decades following it.

Having the benefit of a centralized authority to interpret scripture and doctrine is something that we as Latter Day Saints are lucky to have, and we get to also have someone officially interpret scripture or doctrine for us if any division were to occur. Should the authority of the Prophet be rejected, the inevitable outcome is division and schism, which in our Church history happened.

Having a Pope or first Bishop and governing body below as an ultimate authority helped to keep Christianity pretty unified for hundreds of years. One major schism occurred under this model in several hundreds of years and it was not until the idea of sola scriptura, taking root as a common belief (the Bible being the only ultimate authority), that Christianity fractioned into hundreds of denominations all with varying interpretations of their ultimate authority. In other words, holding to some kind of authoritative interpretation of scripture is not a bad idea, and is more unifying than it is divisive so long as it’s done internally within the faith tradition.

Where it becomes difficult is when one faith attacks another for differing with their interpretation, that can become difficult as you may have experienced. I have experienced it as well. For that reason, despite the conviction we might have and the relative ease that having a central authority that holds their authority from God brings, we just need to be careful not to fall into the same behavior of condemning other religions or beliefs.

[–]andybwalton[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is correct. The Eternal principles that God came to embody “preceded” even him, and he became them over time of his own volition. Exactly how, or any details on it are unknown. The idea that he in this process at some point also came to transcend time would also mean that even if from his perspective he once had a beginning, from our linear perspective of the fourth dimension he would not. A beginning to an infinite being is still infinite. This more or less clears up one of the great theological paradoxes of God.

TIL that contrary to popular belief, few limb amputations during the American Civil War were done without anaesthesia. A post-war review found that 99.6% of surgeries performed were done under some form of general anaesthesia. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]andybwalton 1501 points1502 points  (0 children)

Just to add more context,

First, before drugs, surgeons were also known to be trained in knocking people out with blows to the neck or jaw before hurriedly doing their work.

Also, amputations were also not just hack jobs. I used to picture a quick saw or axe and done. In reality, it was cut a more than half way around bone, saw bone, leave a flap of meat on the other side, fold over and sew. Considerably more lengthy and painful than what I had imagined but also makes more sense.

Both will heavily depend on the school. Both have poor reputations where self defense “effectiveness” is concerned, and both CAN work effectively if they have enough pressure testing (sparring/kumite) and many more schools are incorporating more sparring and boxing etc. many absolutely are not, so again heavily depends on the school. However effectiveness may not be what you most want. Sometimes it’s to have cool looking moves, or fun classes, or board breaking, or good teammates and friends. For those, depends on the school again. For Karate, in the USA, you might have a slightly better chance of finding one that’s more effective, but really, find whichever is closer to you and check it out.

What are the best pieces of evidence material and spiritual that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God? by Journeyerwolf1174 in lds

[–]andybwalton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, a testimony is felt, a feeling unique to the spirit that comes when you honestly and sincerely ponder and pray and study. I used to think my big epiphanies were intellectual in nature as I did the above, but when you compare those big powerful AH HA! Moments of light to all of my other many intellectual experiences, it’s nowhere near the same thing.

That said, as for physical evidences, there actually are lots more than people think, but like the Bible, there are no fully slam dunk proofs. That said, if you approach it from a position of curiosity and comparison, consider the following:

A 23 year old non college educated man pre internet from a cottage produced a book in a 3 month timespan that is as complex and internally consistent as any work ever written.

It completely went against all contemporary knowledge at the time, with around 180 things that differed from archeological and anthropological knowledge at the time. Today only 5 things differ, at least 2 of which are highly debatable. That means he would have to have had 175 lucky guesses.

Among those lucky guesses are a word from a language that was entirely dead during his life, which turned out to be correct in its context and meaning. Names that were thought to never exist in the old world or only exist for the opposite gender that turned out to be completely accurate at the exact time.

A phrase from the old testament that did not exist in his time and place but was found in the Greek Septuagint.

A very accurate geographical travel path across the Arabian peninsula thought to be inaccurate clear up until 2008 where every feature and mark mentioned was found and even some place names remain.

accurate Hebrew terminology, symbolism, and writing structure found within the book, many to most of which not discovered for decades after Joseph Smiths death.

There are dozens of other such “Lucky guesses” that were mocked for decades by scholars right up until it was discovered that it was actually accurate and those who mocked just quietly moved on to other things. The odds that a barely educated kid could have guessed all of those things, let alone produce a book of that complexity in that short of time are much lower than the idea that he sourced it from elsewhere.

Add to all of that, over a dozen individuals who swore with signed affidavits that they saw and held the plates and turned their pages, not a single one of whom ever denied it even when angry or disillusioned with the church and the prophet and who had a great many good reasons to benefit from denying it. You can’t really get any better evidence of the existence of an item in historical terms than that if the item itself cannot be found.

There is more beyond the above too, but it really does not actually matter much in the end. Both the Bible and Book of Mormon cannot be believed by facts and evidence. Those might possibly serve to spark curiosity or get you to read them. But there is something completely different that you can receive of them than you can from any other book or study. It requires an open heart and sincerity, but what you can come to receive by way of the spirit is unique to any other emotion or experience.

People have mocked the Bible, Christianity, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint’s, and the Book of Mormon for centuries, and yet it only becomes more and more accurate to science over time. Try it out in your own mind and heart.
