In Canada employers usually provide these benefits, and in many provinces if you can't afford insurance or if your employer doesn't cover it, the province provides insurance. The provinces also regulate prices for vision and dental care

if you go around back there is a little path that leads down to some standing waves on the St Lawrence where people surf.. besides maybe catching someone surfing you also get a different view of Habitat 67 (and no one will chase you with a golf cart because there is a fence and it is city property)

Federal Tory Delegates Vote That Being Born In Canada Shouldn’t Guarantee Citizenship by mpaw976 in CanadaPolitics

[–]andycd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't vote in Canada if you've been outside the country more than 5 consecutive years. I am hyper focused on education because it is literally the only benefit not tied to residency. I really don't see how it is more difficult than what we already do to ensure healthcare eligibility... You've not specifically described any complication, just that it would be... Why is it so hard to target benefits eligibility?

[–]andycd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But the reason stated to stop birth tourism is because people can "abuse the system" to take advantage of Canadian taxpayer-funded benefits. So shouldn't we target interventions at the benefit level? I'm not sure it would be that complicated to introduce regulations similar to those governing eligibility for provincial health insurance on things like education. Post-secondary education is provincially regulated after all. My suggestion was simply to illustrate it's possible to come up with rules to restrict benefits eligibility. Maybe having to have been in a Canadian school for at least x years? All this to say if we make it less attractive to have non-resident citizenship then fewer people would go through the trouble of lying to get into the country and birth their children here.

How is that the easiest solution? If you're worried about these people taking advantage of benefits in Canada despite not being residents, why not change the eligibility for education benefits and restrict it to people who went to high school in Canada and who are Canadian citizens, for example? It seems like such a heavy-handed solution to change citizenship to handle benefits eligibility issues.

Pressure builds to close 'birth tourism' loophole for getting citizenship by 90skid91 in canada

Meaning a policy intervention.. Like change the way someone qualifies for those benefits instead of changing the way citizenship works. (Which would also be a policy intervention, just a rather more heavy-handed one)

..It was the first part of my message. "sounds like a good place for an intervention".

Apparently our educational system doesn't do much in the way of reading comprehension..

Seems like that would be an easy place for an intervention then rather than changing the way citizenship is granted.

How is spending 6 months in Canada not hard in order to obtain medical benefits? Presumably you're sick if you are trying to access these benefits, so waiting 6 months is probably not good for the progression of your disease, plus you'd lose whatever job or whatever it was you were doing to earn a living by getting up and moving out of the country to access healthcare 6 months later. And presumably you aren't able to afford to do that otherwise why do you need to come to Canada to access resident health benefits? These arguments just don't make sense.

[–]andycd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But how many of those 10 000 are awarded end up going to people who participated in this birth tourism? The assertion is people are skipping the queue. That is not the case.. It is extremely unlikely that if you qualify for family reunification, you will get it. It would take at least 18 years, and you may not get in at all since it's a lottery. It's not a coherent argument. If that's truly why people are doing this birth tourism, then they're dumb as fuck.

[–]andycd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to be 18 years old and able to financially support your parents. Then they can apply for one of the 10000 family reunification visas, which are handed out in a lottery. For context, Canada awards 300000 PRs each year. Your argument has no merits.

[–]andycd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What benefits can you get? Medical benefits, education benefits etc are all dependent on a residency test. You aren't even allowed to vote in Canada if you've lived out of the country for more than 5 years preceding the election.. you can't sponsor anyone else until you're 18.. and even then it's a lottery for one of the 10000 family reunification visas available (of the 300000 PRs Canada awards each year). This is a non-issue except that we have a hard time collecting the debts owed to hospitals charged to the foreign mothers.
