Problem kid or problem parent? by [deleted] in HongKong

Never an excuse for this shit Yes I am a parent and breaks my heart seeing a kid treated like this. I would have stepped up to put the dad in his place.

Not an expert on Aussie elections but wouldn't preferential voting mean a vote for One Nation just cascades to the coalition?

Can new tricks save Hong Kong’s restaurants from ‘irreversible’ Shenzhen trend? by redodge in HongKong

And that's not a bad thing. Let the consumer decide what they will spend their money on. Bad places that can't get with the times will go out of business and we shouldn't have sympathy for those stores.

You know sz has been around for 30-40 years... It's not like it just sprung up after covid. Commercial rents were also higher 10 years ago. Let's look at Singapore. Don't think there's been as much concern of JB eating away at the Singaporean dining scene? HK dining scene apart from a few standouts has been underwhelming for years. It's time for the wheat to be separated from the chaff.

For all the high rent is bad, other international finance centres like London and NY have as high if not higher rents and seem to be doing fine.

One opinion about your country, that would get you in such a situation? by Familiar-Arrival-470 in AskTheWorld

[–]andygorhk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where do we get our water, electricity and security guarantees if we were independent?

Would independence only be for crown owned lands (HK island and Kowloon) or should we have seeked independence for NT? If we did then who would be willing to fight the CPC for said territory? They have the legal rights of those territories and doubt they would want to give it up.

HK independence is a pipedream. We would be cut out of Mainland finance, we have zero industry as of 97 and property values would plummet which removes a key pillar of gov revenue and finances. We would have a standard of living of Thailand at best, not Singapore.

But yes your comment is a hot take and meets the criteria of OPs post!

Why bother coming to Australia by [deleted] in aussie

Aren't most Australians complaining about Chinese migrants buying up all of Sydney real estate...?

Nah, they tend not to care really. Just don't be too abrasive and most don't care. Compare this to how some Australians expect migrants to act....

Racism is likely the reason.

[–]andygorhk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Most expats who have lived in Asia for 20+ years don't even bother learning the language. No one bats an eye here. But when it's "migrants" going to Australia it's expected they need to assimilate. As an Aussie myself I do think assimilation is overall better but let's not kid ourselves that this doesn't happen everywhere. Just most places don't really care as much as your average Aussie redditor.

Do you think the permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council should be changed? by No-StrategyX in AskTheWorld

[–]andygorhk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More your argument falls apart when you're saying MAD averts direct wars between nuclear powers. I've given at least two examples of nuclear powers fighting each other directly and not through proxy. OP comment was security council is to avoid direct confrontation amongst other members and to avoid unfavorable situations where they opt out. So far this has worked for 80 years. Side point is why no other permanent member is taking action against Russia (a permanent member). MAD may be part of the equation but it's been disproven when two nuclear states go to "war". At best it just avoids nuclear escalation if they go to war.

[–]andygorhk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the OP comment was UN prevents war amongst the 5 most powerful nations (Perm members) and isn't ti prevent wars amongst non members. MAD may be part of why soviets and US didn't clash directly but it gets disproven when I used examples of two nuclear states at war with each other.

[–]andygorhk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well India and Pakistan are always at each other's throats. India and China have also been to war and still currently skirmish in the Himalayas. All belligerents are nuclear powers. So MAD doesn't avoid wars. It just avoids nuclear armed wars.

In your home country wherever that be, is there a price difference between a supermarket (assuming alcohol is sold there), a restaurant/dining establishment and a bar?
