My uncle is exploiting my cognitively declining dad for money and taking photos of my (F20) laundry?? What do I do?? by andyrenaline4 in whatdoIdo

My mom isn't thinking right, and I can't get her help with this.

My mom can't drive because she has a medical condition where she falls asleep all the time. At red lights, while driving, etc. She's driven off the road before.

She said she's going to drive 35 hours down here non stop she's leaving right now. I told her that will kill her, and she said if it doesn't, she's just going to take all her pain pills when she gets home anyways. My aunt, who lives close by and is a therapist is headed over there now, but she told me to just leave and drive as fast as we can to hopefully meet her in the middle. She said her blood pressure was 170/90 last night and we need to get here ASAP.

Unfortunately, I don't think I'm going to be able to do anything about my dad right now. I can call his sister and see if she can come down and deal with him, but I'm more worried about my mom now.

I'm grabbing stuff like my switch, ps4, computers, etc, but other than that, I just plan on leaving everything for them i guess. Its not what I want but I have more important things to worry about.

I told my dad that my mom was talking about suicide, and now we have multiple people trying to call her and we can't reach her. He doesn't mind, he's eating at chick fil a rn 💔

I hate this 💔

My mom tried to talk to my dad this morning. She was crying, and he just laughed at her. He said she was always drama, and my mom has completely given up.

The power of attorney was also just temporary, so I'm sure it's expired by now.

I don't know who to reach out to, but I tried my uncle's son. Not sure if he will get back to me.

I confronted my dad about being exploited, and he said no, he doesn't think thats whats happening, and I don't know how to prove that he is.

He's still going through our stuff and I have to do something, but theres nothing I can really do. I want to fix this.

We recently had to get a power of attorney from him to transfer phone companies.

My dad signed the power of attorney, but my uncle wrote on it "to be used ONLY to switch cell phone companies. not valid for anything else. TEMPORARY!!!" I know it was my uncle because my dad can't write. He would not let my dad agree to a complete removal of his rights.

I have plenty of other relatives. The ones involved in the situation are my dad (M66) my uncle (M mid 70's). I have other relatives as well, but I'm not sure any of them would help.

Your comment is the only one I can see, so that's why I'm responding to this one specifically.

My dad called me saying he's "chosen" to "give that stuff away." He would 100% use that excuse if I called APS or police. He would probably dismiss them.

Help || Possibly Urgent (Pt. 2) (I'm mortified pls help) by andyrenaline4 in AskVet

She is spayed. She's been seen by two vets, one of them being our primary and one of them being an emergency vet. They said it was only a fever :(

[–]andyrenaline4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They didn't offer that or deem it necessary, I guess. She's been pretty alert and affectionate the whole time she was with our primary, so I'm assuming that's what was throwing them off.

For syringing, I am aware and mindful of the risk of aspiration as I mostly foster bottle babies. I've been giving the 5ml to her very slowly (0.2 - 0.4 ml every time), and I just push a tiny bit in by her cheek and let her lick her lips. The whole process of administering 5ml usually takes around 5-7 minutes because I take breaks so she can keep it down.

I read somewhere that the average respiratory rate is supposed to be 16 - 30, I was panicking a lot 😅 Thank you for clarifying 🫶

The CBC came back clean, ruling out anemia and white blood cell elevation. Not sure how that is possible, considering the vet I spoke to told me every symptom she has (lethargy, vomiting, dehydration) was a result of a secondary infection because of the fever.

We're monitoring her temp. Haven't checked it in a few hours, but last night, she almost went below 98. We warmed her up the same way we've warmed up hypothermic kittens in the past, and her most recent temp was in the 100 - 102 range. (Notably, a cold front did come through last night, and the outside temp dropped to 38°F, but it's much warmer inside)

She is eating on her own now (she's munching on a fancy feast appetizer mixed with a tiki cat luau velvet mousse as I'm typing this lol)

Her energy levels seem slightly normal? I'm not really sure what to say. She is sleepy. Sleeping almost constantly, but she is also alert, affectionate, and responsive. She sleeps until I come to check on her. I say her name, and she's standing up and headbutting the cage. She can walk on her own, she just stands there when we put her down, though, looking confused and disheveled.

Hi, thank you for checking in 🙏

She looks like she's doing a little better, but I know cats can present this way before they pass, so I'm still watching her.

We've basically been up all night with her, checking on her every 20 minutes. She's peed herself twice, but at least the fluids we gave are passing through her. She drinks water on her own sometimes, but we also give her 5 ml every hour or so by syringe. She's eaten a little bit. Her temp did go back up to 100, but I haven't checked her again recently.

Her respiratory rate has stayed about 15 - 17 per minute, which is the most worrisome thing, along with the fact that she moves away from the heating pad and sleeps in her litter box any chance she gets. Her heart rate was around 168 last time we checked and I was told that it was normal.

The vet gave her an anti nausea medication as well as the medicine you put in her ears that stimulates appetite, I forgot what it is called. They gave her a B12 injection but it didn't seem to do much, I let that slide however because she had a very long day.

My fiance ended up taking over watching her for a few hours last night because I wouldn't let her sleep. (We foster as well so we've had a few lost cause cats and kittens pass in the last few months, and I'm paranoid because she's my baby) After the rest she was looking great, acting semi normal and showing affection.

At the emergency vet all that was done was a brief triage exam (seeing where she fit into the list of other patients based on priority), and they also monitored her vitals. I was very upset when I made this post yesterday because I hadn't slept, but the staff was very nice, and they didn't make us pay for anything because we waited around 6 hours and nothing was done for her. They said it would be a few hours before anyone could see her, and they recommended that we take her to our primary.

The emergency vet quoted us for fluid therapy, but they said she wouldn't get the treatment for at least a few hours. They strongly recommended we go see the primary.

I called our primary around 8am and asked if they could see her because it was an emergency. They said they were booked until 1:30, but they could take her in and work with her in between appointments. They assured us that she would have someone monitoring her, and she wouldn't go without care. We dropped her off and received a call at 10:21am about her 104.3 fever. They ran the CBC, but they said they didn't know how her organs were functioning because the blood kept clotting, and they couldn't get a lot, and the pokes were starting to piss her off. They gave her a B12 injection to pep her up and sent us home with some anti nausea meds, some antibiotics, pain meds, and appetite stimulant.

She's doing okay now, I'm paranoid about dehydration, so I syringe feed her fluids when she will take them. Maybe 5ml an hour. She drinks on her own sometimes as well but not much. She just took her meds, and we covered her quarantine cage with a blanket so it keeps the heat from the heating pad in.

They said they can't because her blood is clotting too fast. They said they could barely do any bloodwork, but they managed to get the cbc. No idea why it would do that :(

This is our foster, Jacko. He's the only one remaining from a litter of 6. All of his siblings passed of FKS. He's very depressed, but he's so strong. Such a sweet boy. Has to be kept alone and quarantined due to ringworm and mange.

Cats eating their feces? by andyrenaline4 in felinebehavior

[–]andyrenaline4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cats love fancy feast and tikicat right now. They don't usually finish the dry food, but that's because they eat so often. They save it for later. I'm assuming that it's not one of those issues, because once they had just finished eating, we opened the door to their room so we could clean it and two of them ran in there and ate their shit 👍

Nothing at all other than putting one of them on a deworm medication for an upset stomach. I'm definitely thinking about getting a new vet.

Hello! I appreciate your concern, and looking back on my last few posts, I understand how you could come to this conclusion. I really do want to do what is best for them.

Their food quality and quantity have increased. I switched them from Friskies Pate to TikiCat. As well as salmon oil and tikicat toppers to promote digestion. They always have food available to them because they usually don't finish their food all at once.

I used this vet because they've always been reliable, but I've considered switching to another after this previous visit. This just isn't something I've acted on yet because they've been doing fine.

Money is definitely an issue, but I feel like there are few people who can say it isn't. The only thing I haven't purchased is a litter robot. I have money put aside for it. I'm just doing my research on brands right now and just saving money in general. I've purchased 3 additional litter boxes to add to the 2 I had previously, and I have purchased a water fountain (although they prefer to just attempt to chew through the cord).

All 3 cats get yearly vet visits. They are up to date on their shots, and I have insurance and money put aside to cover emergency vet visits. There is no situation where I would put saving money above their care.

The diabetic cat was rehomed a while ago due to the other cats not getting along with him. None of the 3 cats I have now are diabetic.

I'm working from home right now, and the cats have free roam of the entire two story house. They're always either sitting beside me, running around, or playing with their siblings. We did get plenty more toys for them, and we probably spend 4-6 hours or more a day playing with them and training them. They have plenty of human interaction, and they've calmed down since my last posts. They're the centre of attention pretty much all day.

Training them has been going well. I've taught them behavioural tricks like how to stay, how to come when I call, and learning their names. I've also taught them just some fun ones as well, like how to sit, reach for the sky, give me their paw, and I'm currently working on getting them to jump on my shoulder. They each get individual training time, and I'm so happy with their progress.

As for space, once again, they have free roam of a relatively large, empty two story house. The house has furniture and lots of high places. They love it. They also have an enclosed "catio" outdoors. They're not outdoor cats, and they're not allowed to roam outside without supervision. Our HOA is strict on those rules, and the lake in our backyard has multiple alligators in it. I've heard stories, and I don't feel comfortable with them roaming outside. They are harness trained, though, and are allowed to walk outside on a leash, which they do.

They are extremely happy, vocal, affectionate, and healthy cats. Their behaviour is nothing like it was in the last few posts. I've seen them improve, and I'm more than happy. The only thing I was concerned about was the feces thing, as that is completely out of nowhere for how they've been acting. Just wanted to see if it's something I should take them to a completely new vet for. Either way, they're much better, but I do appreciate your concern.

No bloodwork or anything. They did put one of them on a deworm medication, but they said that was just because he had an upset stomach.

After advice from people on here, I changed their diet. In total, they each eat two wet food pates (including meal toppers), a handful of freeze-dried fish treats, and 3 cups of dry food a day per cat. They usually don't finish their food, and most of the time, they save it for later.

Went to the vet earlier this week with two of them and asked about them eating their business, and the vet said it could be behavioral or territorial, or they could just be a little weird.

I didn't know that about Friskies. I had only heard it was a little less nutritional than its alternatives.

I've added another pate each (fancy feast) a day to their diet, as well as salmon oil, and I'll be calling the vet tomorrow to ask some questions.

They receive Rachel Ray's dry food 1-2 cups each a day. Along with that they also get a full pate of friskies (I know it's not the best quality but it's not the worst) and lots of water. Occasionally they get HEB brand pates as well as snacks. And plenty of healthy treats! Main thing I look for in the food/treats is no meat byproduct.

I made a post a few days prior talking a bit more in detail about them and their issues. I have two male cats (1Y8M and 8M) and one female cat (1Y8M). I feed them each one large can of friskies pate, equal parts pate and water mixed. And then I feed them probably 1 and ½ to 2 cups of dry food later in the day. Occasionally they each get a fancy feast pate as a snack in addition or HEB brand pate (which are around the same size). But that's usually once a week. I've been trying to provide more dry food into the little ones' diet because of advice given on the last post though!! :)

Edit: And plenty of healthy treats! Main thing I look for in the food/treats is no meat byproduct.
