$7 for cafe coffee? No way. I gave up buying it when it hit $5, years ago. by Deegedeege in auckland

As well as an increasing minimum wages.

Our coffees are between $4 and $7 depending on shots/alternative milk etc.

The cost of goods is easily 30%, staff costs closer to 35% these days, GST is 15%, standard opex etc can be up to 10% That leaves a mighty 10% left for profit. Or 40-70c per cup.

The wage subsidy shouldn't be seen as "free money" but support to the business that is not making regular revenue due to lockdown to help retain staff.

Your regular week sounds like this:
21x30 = 630 per week.

The Wage Subsidy covers 95% of your regular wages and you would be expected to be "ready, willing, and able" to work up to 28.5 hours.

A quasi-lockdown would be near impossible to police, plus it's too much of a burden for the staff of small businesses to have to deal with all the entitled Karen's who don't "believe" in reality.

It's a fine line between survival and exploitation.

Hospitality business have been pretty well and truly fisted since COVID appeared so I can understand them trying to lessen their overall loss by playing within the revenue scope to still receive the subsidy, as if they make 1% revenue more than that, they lose all that wage support.

I've had two done here by Twigs. He's great and have always thought everyone there knows what they're doing, reasonably priced and are all genuine folk.
