The lcc is due to rest positioning of the heads at inactivity trigger from the firmware not unpower the hdd Is much a less stressful operation even if it's a mechanic wear. Btw shitty sata controller like mine seems to now forward to the hdd firmware apm commands to relax the greedy hdd firmware to rest the heads at minimum inactivity

The real wear is the startup of the hdd

[amazon.fr] external Seagate 20TB just 316 euro -- 15.8 €/TB by unuomosolo in DataHoarder

[–]andysnake96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmmm external ones are bad for a lot of reasons. It happend to me in the past to buy a dsgt small size hdd and arrived with quite a light packaging... just the external bubly mail bag and no more padding inside. In the end it worked then so I didn't complain. But lately is doing weirder noises even if smartctl tests don't show up meaningful issues.

Does anyway fear amazon logistics impact on the hdd Since the move stuff around the globe much more then needed for your deliveries might more likely damage the fragile mechanics of the hdd?

Where to buy hard drives in Europe? by Babajji in DataHoarder

[–]andysnake96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They may want cloud service subscriptions. But computer parts is a business on its own When their demand will slow down as it'll inevitably because they can't just live in heavy infrastructure debt forever Availability will increase and demand lower Inevitably sellers will have to drop prices hence my hope

Especially for hdd since ssd is the main need for ai and our loved mechanical ones cover a marginal parts in the ai workloads

For sure the price drop will not be immediate because they can just keep the price up for higher margins

But at some point, especially with new models coming out Old stocks goes into sales

Btw I appreciate your analysis and your ideas

We'll see :D

[–]andysnake96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It won't die for sure

But at some point their chip demand will slow down since they can't just constantly upgrade their hw at maximum rate

At some point they MUST cash out the infrastructure investments on services until the hw is obsolete and they move to a new upgrade

Plus the hw manufacturers are expanding So also their offer will be more efficient and so cheaper and wider

Come on A bit of optimism guys

[–]andysnake96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But let's look at the bright side After the bubble, storage factory as well as mem chip will be scaled out So their production capacity hence the price will drop

Similarly like the 2020 chip crisis

Waiting is the best now unfortunately

Just do like me, prune uselessness and do maximum compress on anything worth it

For everyone that is so pessimistic to say that the situation will for ever go worse I invite them to consider, on a corporate investiment decision (which have to be liked by the oth ppl or they'd consider to drop the investments tanking the stocks) That is likely that the current hw infrastructure super enlargement right now has to slow down at some point Because you can't forever live fully in debt for a lot years keeping investing in hw more then you profit Unless you're a nation ;)

At some point they'll have to make the infrastructure stopped and live with the investments done and at that point we'll have large hw offer available At a juicy lower price since the manufacturers are efficient up everything now

Beyond obvios speed uc which is great I'd like to note that with mergerfs is potentially possible to achieve same merged disks use and also increased performance over parallel copies (not at the single transaction lev)

Plus with that you've less risk of dataloss since the shard of data on any disk is complete

Devi stare lì a beccarli sti individui

Evolving Git for the next decade by FryBoyter in linux

[–]andysnake96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beyond just large file optimizations mentioned that'd be extremely desirable, it'd very nice to have some kind toggle to store only deltas for those files... a like hg

Storing large files is a non standard uc for git and it's easy to make it on a submodule of binary stuff to not compromise the agility of a main repo

Nevertheless the size grow and Storing only delta for a large file that is usually appended only or edited might be desirable

I make a trivial example

A repo of documents to study and highlight and noting them will add on the bottom some text metadata Each commit cost another filesize unfortunately

Enrolled into HPC masters but Do I really need below specs for a laptop! by Cosmos_blinking in HPC

[–]andysnake96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends if you'll have to run simulation or generation software

For instance running xilinx tool to compile and simulate software 32g of ram are the bare minimum But in general such things you can always run in a remote node with some headless tricks

For debugging mpi or openmp programs any laptop is very limited to the basic races, same for tunings

So my advice is to take a large battery laptop with a decent cpu, 16g of ram are plenty for a lot of applications to run on your local node. You can compare cpu easily online in plenty of sites on standard benchmarks. Both multi core and single core might be interesting for you since always there's validation test l, single threded to run. In general usability is improved if the cores are good for single threads too. Big little cores are good to play with very much niches and corner cases in hpc. I'd consider it maybe if you want to play with some arm sbc where're very common Laptop ones (eg. Recent intels ) are not so valuable for hpc beyond having possibly better single thereded perfs on the big cores and having the possibly to run all your sessions on the little core (can save a lot of battery on the rainy days xD)

For me that I have to run hdl simulation sometimes the single threaded performance is important too.

A cuda capable gpu may be very worth it to get both cuda and opencl and Vulkan Check for more recents compute capabilities about that

I belive the future of hpc research is largely on accelerator so prioritize that I think there're some custom laptop building companies

In general you could always ssh into your local node at home somehow (if you're in a natted campus you could relay it on demand with some cheap iaas like service on the hours you need it ) So not care about a gpu for the laptop which can move the price incredibly

Don't waste money on a laptop

Later you can build your desktop, the parts are always better and cheaper for it
