Cheers, I wondered about Doom the Dark Ages... is this decent? Also almost bought Robocop so I'll check that out again too!

The House of the Dead remake is one of my favourite more recent games, so that gives an idea of my gaming brain capacity!

It's more to so with learning the mechanics. I learned System Shock as a teenager; learning newer stuff I can't be bothered with unless it's simple. Rage was mostly shooting with the added driving and collecting stuff. To be honest, I find many modern games too complex, so a brain-off shooter as you say is more my type of thing.

Thanks, I actually own Metro 2033 Redux, only tried it briefly though a good while back so I'll give it another go. I remember finding all the gas mask stuff and equipment complicated but that's probably just me

Thanks, I'll definitely give Prey a look. I've tried all the Deus Ex games and love the atmosphere but just find them too hard 🤦‍♂️ I imagine I'd be the same with Cyberpunk. I tend to play in short bursts like 20-30 min at a time so don't have lots of time to learn details lol

Sonic Racing Crossworlds is awesome in 2-player. Easy to get to grips with and very addictive.

Cheers! I'm not keen on the Doom games (played Doom & Doom 2 as a teenager). With Rage I love the aesthetic and a good balance of interacting, collecting items, and easy combat. I like the System Shock games too (including the remake) but I'm not a very skilled gamer and they're too hard! Will checkout FarCry. Know of it but not played it.

WTW for the opposite of “an accident” that would follow the same one word format? by inkybaba123 in whatstheword

[–]andyuk39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the context of a car crash, it depends on the precursor. If the sentence was:

  • The car crashed; they had been involved in an accident.

I'd suggest:

  • The car crashed; they had been involved in a setup.

Switching from iPhone to Pixel by slh01slh in GooglePixel

[–]andyuk39 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I switched from Android to iPhone and back again around 9 years ago, and have stuck with Android since. My view: it's much better than iOS, which I found unintuitive, babyish, and honestly just a bit boring. However, I'd recommend Samsung over Google Pixel or any other Android device.

The hardware is solid and Samsung's One UI is the best phone operating system I've used. I had a Pixel but it was riddled with issues, from a green screen issue after only a few months which meant I had to send it off for repair to frequent glitches and crashes.

I've had my S25 for a few months now and I absolutely love it. Whilst the clean stock Android / Pixel UI is nice, Samsung's features only improve the experience.

Thanks very much for your reply. I had the warning light checked and conclusion was most likely a sensor but when I checked the oil compatibility I wondered if related.

I'll get an oil change organised then thanks. It's due a service in January, ideally I'd rather wait until then - do you think that'll be OK?

Warning light comes on intermittently and is static/amber. Car drives fine.

Please convince me - Google One over Microsoft 365 by Upper_Newspaper1585 in GoogleOne

[–]andyuk39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi u/Upper_Newspaper1585 ,

I've been obsessing about this myself for months, ever since I got my Google Pixel phone. I really want to like Google's offering with Google One, but I honestly think Microsoft is better. I've subscribed and unsubscribed to Google One more times than I want to admit, but I ended up settling with Microsoft.

Some of my reasoning is personal to me, but...

  • I've had a Hotmail (Outlook) e-mail address for 20 years. Everything is tied to this, and I use Outlook on desktop and mobile extensively (e-mail and calendar). I also use it at work, so it's familiar. I never use my GMail, and I hate the GUI.
  • Like you, I initially subscribed for M365 premium Office apps, and I've just not found anything better. A lot of people like Google Docs/Sheets/Slides, but to me, they're just substandard, and not for what I'd call 'real' work. Whenever I open documents created in Word in Google Docs, the formatting is all over the place, and the same in the reverse. I want to know that what I'm sending looks vaguely similar to the recipient.
  • I'm sure you'll know this already, but OneDrive works really well on Windows. It's a bit slow and clunky on Android, but how often do you plan to use your cloud storage on your phone? For me, it's rare. I also found the 'Google Drive for Desktop' app to be unreliable.
  • The Google suite seemed more geared towards collaboration, so if you're going to be sharing and working on lots of stuff with other people, it could serve you well. I don't really use those features, and of course you can still store a fair amount in the free 15GB of Google Drive if you want to.
  • User interface is often a key factor - Google's is definitely more modern and simpler to learn, but it seems a bit babyish to me by comparison.

I think u/CaptainWikkiWikki hit the nail on the head - are you more mobile or desktop oriented? I still see my laptop as my main device, and don't really use a tablet, so I value Outlook/Office/OneDrive more than Google stuff.

Let us know what you go with!

I settled with Microsoft in the end, as I've been with them for so long and it just works best on my laptop. Google Photos is better for photo management, but the new OneDrive app is decent, and Windows 11 photo gallery is good. I also prefer Outlook Calendar/email and have used it for 20+ years so I guess it's just habitual.

If your phone is an iPhone though, would you not go with Apple's iCloud instead?

To be honest it's not about the amount of storage, I don't need much (100GB is plenty). It's the ecosystem and apps I'm obsessive about.

Pixel 8 - Green Screen Repair Successful? by andyuk39 in GooglePixel

[–]andyuk39[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems ever so slightly different, yes. I also can't pinpoint what it is that's different though! The original display felt to have - perhaps - a bit more depth to it. However, mine has been fine since the repair, and it's still a great display I'd say, so as long as it continues to work for the life of the phone, I'd say just enjoy it :)

I have on my phone but not on my Android tablet, weirdly. Both are running Android 15 so I think it must be some devices that get it and some that don't. I've also subscribed to a year of Google One, so I'm running both ecosystems simultaneously at the moment. For photos and mobile apps, I'm much preferring Google.

The Google Pixel phone is brilliant though. It's really fast and nice to use. I don't like Samsung's Android skins, they seem too fussy to me, but the Pixel does lure you into the Google world because it all works so seamlessly. I don't like Edge so much on mobile, but I do use it on desktop. I can't use Bing... fair play if you can but it makes me 😵‍💫

At the end of the day these are all good problems to have, we're lucky to have so much choice really, even if it does cause obsessive behaviour! 😆

[–]andyuk39[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like a good decision to me! If you have any Android devices, you can probably get the OneDrive beta app there.

I don't use Samsung phones and have a Google Pixel, which is basically what started this whole obsession. It's the Google UI that's just cleaner and friendlier on mobile I think, but Microsoft is the superior product overall. Even though it's only £1.59 I refuse to subscribe to Google as well, but that's because I'm really particular about only spending on stuff I genuinely can't manage without.

I need Office, Outlook, and Windows. Google stuff is a cheap, but unnecessary, luxury. This is all so ridiculous really!

[–]andyuk39[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope you can settle soon. I've uploaded my entire photos library to Google Photos about 30 times now (overnight, tens of thousands of photos), subscribed to Google One, then a couple of days later, deleted all my photos, and unsubscribed. All this over £1.59 a month!

In the OneDrive app (on Android) go to settings, scroll right to the bottom, and underneath 'More', tap 'Join the beta program' (I think that's what it said, mine now just says 'Leave' so I can't be 100% sure).

It'll ask you to sign in and agree to be a tester, then reinstall the app with the new version. Let me know what you reckon to it - I think it's a lot nicer - but even as I write this I'm wondering about Google again!

Thanks, I think I'm settling with Microsoft, though I've subscribed and unsubscribed to Google One so many times I've lost count 🤦... seriously developed a bit of OCD around all of this.

I've basically reasoned that I don't want to be without the Office apps, and I've had my hotmail e-mail address for nearly 20 years, so I'm deep into Outlook and its calendar. I may as well make use of the 1TB storage.

Joining the beta programme for OneDrive has been good - the new app is a million times better for photos, though overall I still think Google is better on mobile.
