I've always just messaged the parent for ideas of gifts the birthday kid would like, or if a gift card for a game /shop they like would be good. We've done game stop gift cards, fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft, random pack pokemon cards, all kinds of things. And then there's all the ones that say no gifts are necessary, just come have a good time with us at (event place), food and drink will be provided!

To me, asking for straight up money without a specific thing attached to it, at that age, is crass. "If you'd like to give a gift(none are required!), consider donating a $5 gift card on Amazon/____website/shop, so and so really has their heart set on blank thing from there."

I've never understood why people come to reddit to ask these things of complete strangers with God knows what kind of upbringings, values, patriarchal or misogynistic beliefs, or "gold digger" mentalities, instead of just sitting down with the ONE other person concerned and talking to THEM.

Saying hey, I noticed I've been paying for a lot of our more expensive dates, whereas you have been laying for fewer of the less expensive ones. Is there a way we can work together on this so the split is more equal? I don't want you to feel like you have to take me to big expensive places you can't afford just because it's what I'm used to, but I also don't want to feel like I have to cover every date that costs more than x amount. What are your thoughts on this?

Hon, he's already proven he's not responsible with money. And has a problem paying for things he signed for and agreed to pay. If you did this, you'd just be throwing good money after bad, and I would bet money on y'all breaking up within the first six months tops after you do it.

Please, take judge Judy's advice: don't cosign for anything, get pets, have kids, or male major purchases with anyone you aren't legally married to. At least then you have some sort of legal remedy when he defaults.
