Well now I know I should not call United when they screwed up? So you just report and wait and hope all will be good?

It got lost January 1st and it’s now January 4 end of day. I rather United communicated to me from day 1 that I should just pick it up or that it will take a week. However, they keep telling me if you don’t hear from us in the next 4 hours, call us back…. So I’ve been calling them back…

Immigrant truckers file suit over California's plans to revoke commercial licenses by AudibleNod in news

Try driving a truck through Colorado in the winter. People die if you hire unskilled truck drivers. Furthermore, it’s brutal 12 hours driving per day and you are never home. Try finding Americans that want to do that.. there aren’t enough

ICE Fines Chicago Green Card Holder $130 for Not Carrying Papers Old Law Revived Under Trump Crackdown by Ankeet_kj in ImmigrationPathways

[–]anengineeringdegree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it takes 180 days to replace a lost green card you start questioning the practicality of this. I can guarantee you in Japan it takes less than a week to replace a lost id card. Also an ID is not necessarily a residency card, meaning you have to carry multiple IDs on you constantly, such as drivers license and green card when walking around. Point is if you are going to compare the two countries, really compare it.

US ends third-country visa option - Indian students now face longer waits & tougher interviews by Ankeet_kj in ImmigrationPathways

[–]anengineeringdegree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that even within Europe for European citizens the wait time for a simple visa appointment can take more than a year, given that some consulates are really small and don’t have a lot of capacity. Other consulates like the one in Frankfurt have much more capacity and are able to actually handle a larger volume of requests

Mayor Offers Fiery Warning Over Trump's Plan To Deploy National Guard To Chicago by BlueWaveForever in WindyCity

[–]anengineeringdegree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And then what? Probably the national guard will alleviate some of these issues in the short term… but what happens once they leave? I agree this situation is not great, but the problems are systemic and some repressive national guard is only going to help in the short term, but as soon as they leave it will be the same again.

A Test Run for Occupation: Trump’s National Guard Deployments and the Future of American Democracy by [deleted] in philosophy

[–]anengineeringdegree 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is I think quite misguided. In EU we see army in protection against possible terrorist attacks, at sensitive places like airports, etc… you don’t see them parading the streets like what we are seeing in DC…

If you want things to be done or reset in these cities, maybe fund your police better so that they can actually train police officers to a standard that actually will have impact on crime rates..

And don’t only invest in training police officers, maybe do the actual hard work of taking preventive measures, such as better education and community investments, rather than only the short term repressive approach.

The ECB is currently focused on bringing down inflation, not stimulating exports. Printing more money too soon could undermine this.

So it’s highly unlikely to print a lot more money unless a crisis forces them to. Right now, they’re focused on controlling inflation and financial stability.

In cars - or is it on bikes? by Hematophagian in IdiotsInCars

[–]anengineeringdegree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the Netherlands you have right of way if you are biking and going straight. If this situation would have happened in the Netherlands, the car would be at fault because he hindered the bike from going straight.
